Thyroid and above clavicle pain

I have had pain in my thyroid area for a week now.  It got worse, I developed a fever, had chills then I was so overheated and couldn't cool down at all.  The next day, I went to the doctor and he put me on an antibiotic for a sinus infection.  He said my nasal passages looked a little inflamed.  I have been on the2,000 mg. of amoxicillin antibiotic for 4 days now and am not better.  I tossed and turned and moaned all night long last night.  I was miserable.  The pain is so bad, that it really hurts to yawn, sneeze, cough, swallow, and even takes effort to talk and turn my head from side to side.  I have to eat real soft foods that take no effort to swallow, and with that, I still have pain!  The thyroid region down to my clavicle is very tender and hurts with even the slightest touch.  It seems like the pain gets worse as the day goes on, also.  Could it be thyroiditis?

I told the doctor that I didn't feel ill 4 days ago, because I know what a sinus infection, bronchitis and laryngitis feels like.  This pain is different.  It is not internal  like the pain you would feel with an upper respiratory infection.  This is pain that I have never felt, and I can tolerate a lot of pain.  I asked the doctor about getting a thyroid blood test, and he said that since my thyroid count was normal 2 years ago, you wouldn't see a big change in the numbers.  He did say that if the pain isn't better in 6 days, that he would order an ultrasound to see if there are any nodules that the thyroid blood test wouldn't pick up.

What would you recommend that I do?  Does this sound like something I should get checked out immediately for?  I don't want to have a thyroid conditon.  I read that thyroiditis could eventually lead to hyperthyroidism and then move quickly to hypothroidism.  I am an active 44 year old woman and I exercise everyday.  I am so sluggish and don't have the energy like I did before all of this.

This could be thyroiditis - evaluation usually includes thyroid function tests (which can certainly change in a two year period of time......) and sedimentation rate.  Depending on this and your continued symptoms ultrasound and sometimes I-123 uptake study can help confirm the diagnosis.

Thank you so much for your recommendations, Dr. Lupo. I did forget to mention a few things.  I haven't changed my eating habits and I lost 7 lbs last week.  Before all of this started, about a week earlier, I had some red wine that didn't agree with me.  The next day I vomited bile, dry heaved and was miserable.  I actually thought that my pain was due to the after effects of all of that.  I mentioned it to the doc., and said that at first I thought, "Could this be muscular pain from vomiting."  But, the pain didn't start until days later, nhas gotten worse,
