mommy2two2008: Should I Have My Thyroid Removed?

I have an enlarged heterogeneous thyroid but my blood values have always been fine (TSH, FT4 and FT3)  also had negative antibodies.  I am being treated with Armour (60 mcg) and my ENT (and you) have suggested I have Hashi with normal antibodies.  I stopped taking the Armour (stupid, I know that now) about 3-4 weeks ago to see if I really needed it and for most of it, I have been o.k.  Now the neck fullness feeling is coming back, my submental salavary gland on the right is swollen again (not noticeably to anyone else unless I manipulate my tongue in an certain direction), my parotid gland close to the ear feels swollen (again, not visibly) my ear is full feeling again and my right eye has a sort of numb vague feeling around it.  That eye also has a sort of pressure behind it. My ENT has always suggested I have Hashi.  Which, after a year of the on and off swelling, aches and pains, etc., I would have to agree.  They have never found a "nodule" per se, just the enlargement and non smooth texture.  I have had conflicting report via US, the last suggested a Multinodular Goiter with no discrete nodules. My questions I guess now are:

ABOVE WERE ANSWERED DURING WEBCHAT - BELOW IS A FOLLOW-UP QUESTION:
Thanks for the answers Dr. Lupo -- since the cal w/ D supplements, most of those feelings are now gone.  My Dr. suggested I could have the thyroid removed now since its been a year of really not much relief from the swelling that goes on.  What do you think about that??

EBV is a truly evil virus!!! It sounds like your daughter will be just fine once she gets through the initial infection. :)

Well, her results are in and she has active EBV. I got a blood test today to check and see if I have that.  Maybe that would explain some of my swelling neck.

Thanks N!  I will.  We see the infectious disease dr. on Friday so I will update with what's been going on with her as well when we get some answers.  My thing is that I had all the thyroid swelling way before the surgical staph (me - my thyroid journey began in March) and way before her development of nodes (October). But, it begs the question of these continued and wierd symptoms now.

As of right now - here's what's with her Dr. Lupo.  In October, I got a surgical staph infection from a tubal ligation.  I was hospitalized for a week and it came back as MSSA.  My daughter developed a swollen lymph node in her neck, top part of the neck, near the ear and jaw on the left side. She was not sick at the time of development, although, when she went to the dr, she her throat was red.  They treated with antibiotics and strep tested and she did not have strep.  She has kept this node and developed others (bilateral under the jaw, in the clavicle area and axillary, but only the one on the left is what can be seen).  They have treated her several times with antibiotics and even prescribed 21 days of antibiotics, which we finished not long ago.  I think in November, she was throat swabbed for staph.  That came back positive for MSSA, the same staph I had in my surgical wound from October. When I called the pedi recently to tell him it was still noticible and getting bigger now, he referred her to an infectious disease pedi and she went the other day. She had a chest xray (normal) and we are awaiting multiple blood tests (the norm, EBV, CPC, CRP, ESR, toxoplasma, immunoglobulin, bartonella and then the malignancy markers LDH and Uric acid).

Thanks so much for all you do for us Dr. Lupo and N!!

Well - it has been almost a month since our webchat and I have had another developement this week.  I now have hoarseness and dry feeling in the throat that I have not had before.  I am also not sick.  I also have an itchy feeling in my throat and ear, but again, I am not sick.  The tingling is back again in the face, lip (bottom mostly) and throat and I don't know what to do anymore.

I have had 2 blood tests for calcium since this started a year ago- they were 9.6 and 9.3.

I am truly at my wits end and don't know how to approach this anymore.

Might you have any suggestions for me.  Or - could you tell me the pre-op testing that is usually done prior to a TT?  I am seriously considering it now.
