thyroid goiter mass??

I recently was to my urogolist for yearly exam and CT scan. This year I had a chest xray included and doctor called me  with results, told me a mass showed up in thryoid, called it a goiter. He is referring me to another specialist, however, after research about this doctor indicates he is a vascular surgeon. My question, why is he referring me to a surgeon, wouldn't it good to see a thryroid specialist instead to start with? I'm all new at this, I have no symptoms at all and it was  a total surprise. Could it be nothing at all since I have no symptoms?  I'm not sure where to start...Thanks in advance for your help?

I currently have a goiter  as well tho I have Hashimotoes thyroiditis.  and i take meds for it to keep the goiter  undercontrol. i would go see a thryroid specialist incase it is something that can be controlled after all surgery is not somethign to enter in lightly. My only symptons with my thyroid problem as being tired and my hair started to thin and at age 25 thinning hair was not something that i found normal. see the speacist if you havn't already they would at least confirm if you really need surgery or not .:) good luck let us know how it goes.

i am in somewhat the same thing as you.  i have a nodule only 55mm but the tests all come back normal my throat feels closed and i have a swollen lymph node on the right side under my ear.  i went to the endo. today and she says sorry i have no answers for you.  i made her send me for a uptake scan which will be done in two weeks to see if it is hot or cold.  she thinks it is not going to beable to tell us anything.  she thinks a biopsy is not going to work either.   2 cousins and my grandma and my great uncle all have hypothyroidism.   any answers????

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Sometimes for thyroid masses, a surgeon is initially consulted.  In most cases you don't need a surgeon and the best person (in my opinion) to see for a goiter/nodule/mass is a thyroid specialist (endocrinologist) - that person can then refer you to a surgeon if it is necessary to have thyroid surgery.

Most patients with thyroid nodules have no symptoms.  90-95% of these nodules are benign.  The next step is a TSH -- if normal, and ultrasound confirms a nodule(s) above 1-1.5cm (there is some debate as to the minimum size) then fine needle biopsy is performed.  All this should be done at the endocrinologists office.  Check out thyroidologists.com or thyroid.org or aace.com to find one near you.
