It is criminal that anyone has to suffer because the makers of the medications want to get rich.  I am a long time user of Armour (35 years) and at times have had to resort to the internet.  Now as a senior citizen I am forced to begin their new perscription plan.  In order to afford the monthly charges they only cover generics.  If I want them to cover Armour it is a $60 a month co-pay.  That is laughable since the over the counter price is about $23 or so. Don`t give up there will be help out there somewhere.  What I would like to do is organize a convention of hypothyroid patients.  We could all get together and compare symptoms = meds = ...Goodluck.

Just adding my thoughts.
Have you tried that program that Montel Williams promotes?

"Montel Williams recently launched a massive TV ad campaign to promote a wonderful resource for Americans who can't afford their prescription medications. Anyone who does not have insurance to cover their prescriptions should take a look at the Partnership for Prescription Assistance Web site.
http://www.pparx.org

The PPARx.org Web site provides information on a unique patient assistance program clearinghouse. PPARx.org helps patients, prescribers, and caregivers to find public and private patient assistance programs that may provide free or nearly free medicines to those patients who can't afford them. "

good luck

Check this web site out. I don't know what strength of Levoxyl your on but they look pretty reasonable in price & you can compare prices on here. When I did't have health insurance, I used to get double the strength I was taking & split them in half & I saved money that way. http://www.destinationrx.com/prescriptions/refine.asp?BrandName=Levoxyl
Let me know what you think.        Jean

Just a friendly suggestion:
you need to change doctors if you can. I never heard of any physican who doesn't get samples. Or can't get them for their patients who needs them. I wouldn't want my life in his hands. He's not worth wasting your time on. Just my opinion...for what it's worth..

Eeyore,
All the factors that you mentioned are considered in your determination of need. Your husband's income may be alot but it sounds like your expenses are alot too. They will consider both. Give it a try. Maybe you can get your daughters meds. for free or reduced cost & then be able to afford yours...You need to try...the alternative is not acceptable...you could lose your life & your family needs you. I don't mean to scare you but this medicine is very important to your health. Maybe you could get your Dr. to switch you to a cheaper thyroid replacement, that could also be a possibility.

A decreased activity in the thyroid gland (front of the neck) resulting in an inadequate secretion of thyroid hormones lead to a condition called hypothyroidism. The thyroid hormones are essential to increase oxygen use in cells and fuel vital processes in every part of the body. Hypothyroidism can be found in 2 out of 100 people and anyone can be affected. This condition is more common among middle-aged and elderly women. There is a strong tendency however for thyroid disorders to pass down from generation to generation. Treatment is nearly always successful and allows a patient to live a normal and healthy life.
Periodic monitoring is essential in the management of patients with hypothyroidism to judge the clinical response to treatment, patient compliance in taking the medication, and development of drug interactions, and to adjust the replacement dosage because of changes in body weight or advancing age. Please...Listen to Dr. Mark. This isn't a choice. Make your case with your family doctor & be brutely honest. There's no crime in being poor... Your doctor can contact the drug company that manufactures your med. & they will supply it. If that doesn't work talk to the pharmasist...they may have info where you can get your drugs for free.  I worked in a physican's ofice & you have no idea how many samples I had to throw away because they got outdated. They do supply samples of Synthroid I've gotten from my Dr. before, so they are available. Don't give up.                      God Bless You

I would suggest asking your doctor again and letting him know you stopped taking your medication 2 months ago. They have samples that are given to them by the pharmaceutical companies. My doctor gave me a sample dose while she was checking to see if I needed to be increased. You really shouldn't stop taking your medication, especially when it comes to your thyroid. You are going to cause yourself some serious very problems. If you are feeling bad after 2 months it is only going to get worse. I know how I feel when I miss one day.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
You absolutely cannot be without meds - you would go into a coma within 2-3 months potentially.  contact your doctor about getting assistance with meds or contact your local county health department.  Thyroid meds are life/death issue in your situation.  Given the history of cancer, may also want to consider contacting local university's endocrine/thyroid department for assitance.

Your Doctor's office may be able to help, try contacting
them .
You might also ask the pharmacy that you have your prescriptions filled at.
Perhaps they can refer you to a  program that can help to cover the costs.
Also some of the pharmaceutical companies have programs.
Good Luck!
