Biopsy Results..what does it mean?

Today I received my results from my FNA and I was wondering if anyone could give me their opinion on my results.

Diagnosis - Follicular cells present, singly, in small clusters and sheets w/ many background siderophages; increased numbers of lymphocytes suggest chronic thyroiditis; negative for papillary structures, hurthle cells or microfollicles

COMMENT - The features are most consistent with benign follicular hyperlasia with associated hemorrhage however, a more serious process cannot be excluded on fine needle aspiration.

What do you think will be my doctor's next step and what do you take from these results.

Thank you so much for your input!

So you don't see anything to worry about concerning the follicular cells.  I was told I would probably have to have part of my thyroid removed to have it tested to make sure the follicular cells are benign and not malignant as the fna can't distinguish the difference.

Thanks

Sounds like a benign biopsy with a "CYA" disclaimer by the pathologist.  In general a benign biopsy carries a 95% accuracy.  This is most consistent with a benign nodule with some inflammatory change in hemorrhage.  If you have positive antibodies for Hashimoto's then this would be entirely consistent with changes commonly seen in Hashimoto's.  The most likely next step is repeat ultrasound in 6-12 months to reevaluate the nodule for any changes.
