Can thyroid hormones stabilize after thyroiditis?

I saw my internist for a fever occuring at 4 am and right sided facial pain for 10 days.  She treated me with antibiotics and ordered thyroid studies after feeling a nodule in my neck.  I had thyroid ultrasound and found 2 nodules on right side.  My thyroid hormones showed hyperthyroid and I had palpitations.  After the infection cleared I was tested again and found to have hypothyroid.  We discussed what to do and I was referred to an endocrinologist for follow up.  What I am wondering is can the thyroid correct itself or will I need to take synthroid forever?  We are watching the nodules size.  I also feel itchy, especially my feet.    My lipid panel is severely elevated also.

thyroid usually will correct itself
Recommend follow-up ultrasound to see if nodules need FNA biopsy - often thyroiditis can cause  a nodular appearance that resolves.

Dr. Lupo,
are you saying that that nodules caused by thyroiditis will often just disappear?
