Just wanted to pass my experience along to you in the event it can help in any decisions you have to make. In Feb. 04 at a CT scan, it was found that I had an abnormal mass around the heart and thymus. Under my surgeon's advice, we opted to watch the growth with CT scans at 1 mo, 3 mo., 6 mo. and 1 yr. During those scans nothing changed. Then in March of this year we did another scan and the mass had changed considerably in size so within a few days I had surgery to remove the mass. Turns out it was attached to the aorta, to the lung and wrapped around nerves to the diaghram. My surgeon was able to remove the entire mass along with a piece of my lung. It was cancerous and unfortunately had already spread to various spots on my lungs and heart (Stage IV thymoma). My prognosis is not good and my hope comes in the form of prayers and miracles. I am currently undergoing very intensive chemotherapy and have been very ill. In retrospect I wish I had insisted on the mass being removed immediately upon discovery. But then I would probably not be able to help you, which just proves that something good can come from everything. If you want to talk just let me know on this website. We will find a way to make contact.
In terms of thyroid, the thymus can be enlarged with auto-immune thyroid disease esp Graves. It is also associated with myesthenia gravis. It may also be that your thymus never atrophied after childhood as it does in most patients. In any case if it is causing compressive symptoms (ie pain you describe) then removing it should be considered.
