Help w/lab results following thyroid cancer dx

Hi Dr. Lupo~

I had a 3.5cm throid cancer removed 11/4/08 last year.  It was totally encapsulated with no lymph node involvement.  I had 110mcl of RAI on 1/12/09.  I recently had my blood work done and would like a little help decoding the information.  My TSH is 1.1, tg <0.5, antithyroglobulin <20, T4 free, direct, S 1.66.  My endo says all of these number are great and just wants me to have a neck ultrasound in January and then thyrogen shots and another Tg test.  Does this sound right.  I just want to make sure everything is ok.  Also, I am a 41 yr old female.  I have read recently that the odds of developing other cancers after RAI treatment increase.  Is this true.

Thank you so much for your time.

Sounds like a good report.  Agree with one stimulated (thyrogen) Tg level at the 9-12 month mark.  Neck ultrasound is the best follow-up -- must be done by an experienced clinician though....best if the endo or your surgeon has the ability to do him/herself.

There is a small risk of secondary cancers, but with the moderate dose you received it is very very low.

Your TSH may be a bit higher than ideal until the 12 month mark re-testing proves all is as great as things appeart to be currently.....TSH of 0.1-0.5 may be best for now - ask your endo.
