Fed up

Dr. Mark;  History: Presented with unexplained weight gain (40 lbs in year), cold sensitivity, abnormal periods, and breast milk production w/o pregnancy.  Found pit adenoma, and hypothyroidism.  Watched pit for 3 years, said non secreting, left it alone. Meds for thyroid antibodies.  Have tried thyrolar, levothyroxine, synthroid and armor.  Have had gallbladder, appendix and hysterectomy (cerv canc).  IBS so bad that I want a bowel transplant.  I am so tired I could lay around all day, cant sleep, but dont want to do anything either.  What are we missing here?  If I am on the correct meds (blood works says I am) then why do I feel exactly the same as I did before diagnosis 12 years ago?  Any suggestions?  What would your course of action be?

I'm break out on the palm of the hands and want to sleep all the time with all the thyriod meds. The pharmacy gal said the reading may be good but the t3 and t4 might be off.  so try another med thyriod I'm on 3 gr now.  Than they couldn't get my same pills in and I'm wanting to sleep 15 hrs a day.  All the other doctors also haven't been able to regulate me in 20 yrs.  Also said My breaking out on my hand and sometimes down my arms  was not due to the pills.  stop 2 weeks went away .. started again in one week started again.  After four Doctors one listened and said yes to me being allergic and gave me the thyriod 1 gr  and It made the different.  It had the t3 and t4 I needed. Hope it helps.

Just a thought:  if you're on a generic, like levothyroxine, see if you can't switch to Thyroxin.  The medication is the same but the way your body absorbs it may be the cause.

Case in point:  Without my permission, I was switched (via the pharmacy) to Levothyroxine.... after about a week, I was having, what I can only call brain flashes.  I was exhaused and simply felt like I did before the right adjustment of medication.  Hmmm, what had changed?  That's when I started looking at my meds closer.  Ah ha, levothyroxin?  Did some chewing!!!  It wasn't even on the doctors orders - an assumption made....

End of story:  Was returned to Levoxyl and have been on the mark ever since.  I too gained weight, and am having to work my fanny off to lose.  I was 250  am now 243 and just started adding a daily dose of workout.

Keep the faith and don't give up.  You're going to find the answer.

I assume the prolactin level is now normal and there is no evidence of pituitary disease at this point and the focus is a primary thyroid problem due to Hashimoto's.  You have tried the various combinations of T4/T3 - if the levels have been in the ideal range, there is not much more to do from a thyroid standpoint.

Would pursue a general internal medicine consult or second opinion to sort out all the symptoms and consider a sleep evaluation given the insomnia and fatigue.  It is not likely an adrenal problem, but documenting a normal am cortisol may be re-assuring.
