Hyperthyroid! Need help!

I have a 22 year old daughter who just had bloodwork done due to her noticing hair loss about 3 weeks ago in a quarter or more size spot on her crown. Shes a new RN Nurse, working shifts, and stressed latley. Always healthy, no problems. Is on birthcontrol Sprintex.

The PCP put her on .25 mg of Synthroid (sp)  we are reading THAT is given to HYPO patients and are confused.
Here are her results:
TSH, 3rd GENERATION 6.57 H  reference range: 0.40 - 4.50mU/L
T4, FREE  1-1   Reference range:  0.8 -1.8 NG/DL
She has an appointment Dec 8 with a dermatologist and a gyne appointment Dec 21.
We are trying to get this all in order and its sooo  confusing...any advice would be appreciated!
thankyou

Her TSH is high - this is considtent with HYPOthyroidism (not hyper).  The treatment for this is a synthroid-type medication.  Sometimes hypothyroidism is transient, therefore would do further evaluation such as TPO antibody and consider no treatment and recheck in 6 weeks to make sure this persists before committing to what is often lifelong medication.

Focal bald sopts are not like like due to hypothyroidism (esp when this mild).  Stress is one cause of hair loss (also not usually focal blad spots).  Dermatology eval is a good idea -- they may do a scalp biopsy.

Dr.Lupo, my our concern NOW is since they did NOT do the proper testing for a FT3 and a FT4, PLUS  TPO antibodys, we dont want her to 'MEDICATE if not needed like you said!  She just started taking the Snythroid .25 on Nov 26, Nov 27 and Nov. 28th...SHOULD SHE STOP TAKING IT SINCE THE PROPER TESTING WAS NOT DONE?  She is really upset and so am I with this method of not testing the whole thyroid.  And this 3rd Generation nosense is for the birds!  Thankyou again

Thank you so much for this information!  Im calling the office Monday morning and having them do another test. Im a bit upset that a F T3 was NOT done as I do not see it on her results.  I dont see a TPO antibody either.  Her CBC was all good with her iron, etc. She has be on Sprintex (sp) for 5 years and says she is stopping it because she read that estrogen can alter the results, too. She has the fatigue, some heart palpitations too.  Never had a weight problem, 5'5" 125. So a large weight gain has not happened. Thankyou again!
