Hypothyroid and high blood pressure

Hi,

I am 30 years old. I have been gaining a lot of weight and totally not myself in terms of personality and attitude! I was finally diagnosed hypothyroid last month (tsh was 10.9  normal range being 1 to 4.4 ) and was prescribed 0.05 mg of levothyroxine. I have been taking it for 2 weeks now , 1 at week I felt a little better. But this week my weight started shooting up again my stomach is bloated and I am getting headaches and feeling very dizzy . I checked my blood pressure in cvs and it came to 140/100 which i understand is stage 1 hypertension. I haven't had hypertension before. Is his bcoz of levothyroxine ? I have my next appointment only in June. Will it be advisable to check with my doctor before that. And it's frustrating how I always get a normal pressure during doctor visit but the levels shoot up in the evening! Please help!

Thanks Doctor!

I spoke to my doctor and he asked me to go without the tabs for 3 days and then start with reduced dosage 25 mcg Levothyroxine. But he wasnt sure what elevated my BP level.

My BP came back to normal now. He said maybe my body was trying to resist the synthetic hormone and that might have elevated BP levels. Thank you!

Would call your doctor.  It sometimes takes several months of medication titration to fully correct hypothyroidism.  Levothyroxine usually does not cause BP increases like this, but would monitor BP closely and see your doc sooner than June.
