high sed rate, sweating, fatigue, irities

My 11 year old son has been having internal inflammation for almost 10 months now. His general symptomps are fatigue, weightloss, and high sed rate in blood. At the beginning of the episode he had fever, sweating, and irities of both eyes last November for almost 4-5 weeks(which is  now gone).

Numerous blood tests, xrays, HLAB29, and many other stool and urine tests could not find anything definitive. We have seen several physicians and the latest diagnosis is some kind of rhumetoid arthrities or IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). However, my son never had any joint pain of any sort or any episode of diareah.

He was put on prednisone in april (40 mg/day in the beginning). It worked like a miracle. He is also taking Pentasa (2000 mg/day to ) and recently started Methotexrate (to substitute for pred).

Now that the pred is getting cut down (17.5 mg every other day, his sed rate and fatigue are going up again. The latest reading is 70 mm/hr (his highest reading was 110 during Nov. and lowest was 20 in may after teh prednisone kicked in).

The persistent symptomps seem to be: (1) high sed rate, (2) sweating in the head during sleep or any activity, (3) fatigue.

Is there any possibility that Robi is having some thyroid disease? Any comment will be much apreciated.

has your son been exposed to any black mold. maybe caused by a leak somewhere in your house. Or is there a place in the house where it appears there was a leak in the past.

Sooby,
In your post you stated you had taken your son to many Dr's. What type of Dr's has he seen? I wonder why he was prescibed such strong medications without a definite diagnosis. Prednisone is a wonder drug for inflamation of any kind but it also masks symptoms. So definite & true symtoms can not manifest while on this drug. He was taking a pretty substantial dose also, this drug can also have major side effects especially when taken for an extended period of time. It supresses the immune systom as does the other two drugs you mentioned making him suseptible to communicable diseases. If you do not feel comfortable with his treatment maybe you should take him to a major medical center like your states university center to get another opinion. The teaching hospitals are up on all the latest technology. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you are saying as I don't know all the tests they have done on him but I don't like the Prednisone issue without a definite diagnosis. Honestly that drug will make any inflamatory problem feel better for the short term but he can't stay on it forever and what is it masking while he is taking it, is my question. Let us know what you find out, ok. I'll keep him in my prayers. God Bless

Sooby, Hi, I know how heart wrenching having a sick child can be and am sorry he is going through this and you too.
As Ar1281a said, ESR doesn't mean thyroid disease but is really a test for inflammation in the body, of any kind. In spite of high antibodies, I too had only a mildly elevated ESR "5", with "20" being abnormal. The bowel disease can present with arthritis inflammation as well and as Ar also said, it doesn't sound like thyroid.
There is a kind of general test for autoimmune diseases called the ANA (Anti-nuclear antibodies) test but at times it will not detect all AI diseases. Mine was negative even though I have AI thyroid disease. It is an inexpensive test and might be something your Dr. would consider.
Other than this, they will likely do many other tests until the problem is found, so it can be treated. I wish I could have been of more help.
God Bless You, Our Prayers are With You!

I'm really sorry to hear about what your son is going on. I'm not a Dr so can't really comment on his condition. However, it doesn't sound thyroid related to me, at least based on my experience - I have thyroid disease and my sed-rate is perfectly normal. Jimlow do you have any insight here?

Have you seen a specialist in the area? has your son been tested for the RA factor? ANA? presence of viruses?

I really hope he gets better soon
