parathyroid failure after 3 years post TT?
by LLV123, 4 minutes ago
Hi, I had TT 3 years ago, had 1 para removed accidentally, 1 re implanted, 2 were "fine" Had low Ca post TT for a few weeks, then ok. Now, 3 years later, had some muscle twitching, had low ionized Ca {1.09, 1.10, 1.14 after I had infusions for 3 days of IV CA. Serum was ok, not high but low 8's. My endo put me on Calcitriol and said para's are failing. NO WAY!! I showed blood work "pre" TT and Ca was 8.4 so run lowish. Took Calcitriol for 3 days, asked endo if I could try OTC to raise it, didn't like the Calcitriol, made my eyes even drier, mouth drier, flushed, and nauseated,...he let me try. Ca levels now last 3 weeks, 9.1, 8.5, 8.8. This is on 3,000 oscal, and 2,000 D. he agreed doing good.
Now, my question....IF I had HPT, would I be able to keep my Ca levels in this normal range by myself with OTC Ca and D? OR IF I had HPT, my levels would go down and not stay stable? OR is is "artificially raised" due to so much CA? I am looking for some reassurance here, that I DO NOT have HPT, and that IF I did, my levels would not be this good....so I don't have it. PTH in hospital was 16, but I was on IV Ca, for 3 1/2 days, and saline fluids non stop.
I just don't get all of this....am I way off base here? I am hoping for answer that my para's seem to be working, of course!! Why would damage occur 3 years later? I have been fine. Saw neuro for EMG which was fine, too. Neuro suggested possibly just benign fasiculations causing twitching.....One more thing, I do not want another 10mm kidney stone, which I had before. And last concern, is all this ca and D SUPPRESSING my para's NOT TO WORK? THAT REALLY CONCERNS ME!!! I want to lower the ca amount SOON hopefully!!
Thank you for your time, I am scared, and have been worried since they admitted me to hospital.
Sincerely,
Lori
