Question about TSH level

Hello:

In the past year and a 1/2 I have been diagnosed with hyperthroidism. At the beginning my TSH was .001 and luckily since that time it has gradually returned to within normal ranges. Five months ago I had a blood test and it was .9. However, since that time it seems like my heart palpatations are getting worse, and I am developing skin rashes. I am on a beta blocker (Metoprolol) 25mg per day. Last week I had my blood tested again and the TSH is .83 and my T-3 uptake is 33. I just wondered even though these levels are still within range, is it safe to assume that my symtoms are due to the hyperthyroidism?

Thanks so much for your time/assistance in this matter.

Dr. Lupo/ar1281a:

Thank you both for your quick responses. I will follow up w/ an endocrine doc, to test for T3 and T4, and will see what he/she says when the results come back. I just have to keep positive too and hope the palpatations/rashes get better in time too.

Thanks again,

Chris

That was not my response.......(the one by ar1281a).

The normal TSH suggests that it may not be your thyroid.  Would get full panel w/ TSH, Free T4 and T3 to complete the picture -- if all normal, then it is not likely your thyroid causing the current symptoms but w/ the history of hyper would keep a close watch on thyroid and agree w/ consulting w/ a thyroid expert to help follow along.

Dear Dr. Lupo:

Thanks for your response. Yesterday I talked to my primary care doc. who is recommending that I see a specialist (endocrine doc) next. When the TSH was abnormal I tried both PTU and Metizole but I experienced low grade fevers so I had to stop taking these drugs. Because these are the only drugs that are prescribed for hyperthyroidism I don't have too many other options to help this problem.

Again, thanks for your help.

you need to get your Free T4 & T3 tested. TSK appears within normal range. Are you taking anything else for your thyroid besides the BB?

Find your self a good endocrinologist that knows what s/he is doing with your thyroid.
