Is your doctor asking for a Free T4 and Free blood test.
A Free T4 Would directly measure the free T4 in the blood rather, It's a little more expensive than the other tests but a lot more reliable. What it does is mesure the total amount of Free thyroxine that is in your blood stream and not which is bound to proteins. The Free thyroxine affects tissue function, but bound does not. Free thyroxine is less than 1% unattached.
Something you should know to is that a T3 blood test is not helpful in discovery but rather in evaluation of the disease. (after they figure out what you have) also a T3 uptake is not a thyroid test at all. It is a test on the proteins that carry thyroid around in your blood stream. A high test number may indicate a low level of protein. The reason I'm telling you about the T3 is that some doctors are very comfused about it and order it during the discovery process. A Free T3 would be better. I'm not a doctor but, I am going through the same thing.
Good Luck
