Thyroid Scan Results

Hello,

I had a subtotal thyroidectomy last September 2005, they found a solid nodule in the right lobe. It was removed and biopsy results were benign.

Recently, I had a thyroid scan and they found another solid nodule. Below are the details of the result:

THYROID ULTRASOUND

Clinical history: Partial thyroidectomy in September 2005.
Pathology follicular adenoma.

No previous examinations or EPR notes are available for
comparison.

FINDINGS: Partial right thyroidectomy. Remnant right thyroid
lobe measures 1.7 x 0.6 cm and contains a mid pole medial
hypoechoic avascular nodule measuring 0.3 x 0.3 x 0.3 cm.

Left thyroid lobe measures 1.4 x 0.9 cm. No focal lesions
identified.

No lymphadenopathy.

OPINION: Small solid hypoechoic in the medial aspect of the right
remanent thyroid. Close follow up with ultrasound in 2 months
advised to ensure stability.

What is the cause of nodules growing on the thyroid? Are there foods or vitamins which I have to take to prevent this?

Other information: I am taking Eltroxin 50 mg from Monday to Saturday and 100 mg on Sunday. I just had my blood work for FT4, FT3 and TSH and the results are normal.

Thanks.

No food/vitamins that are likely to influence nodules.
Cause is usually unknown -- nodules are typically overgrowth of normal thyroid tissue.

A 0.3cm nodule in the right remnant is not a significant concern, but followup ultrasound is recommended.  Would usually not do biopsy until more than 1 cm.

Because the nodule is hypoechoic you will be rechecked after 2 months, to make sure that it is not increasing in size.
We do not know what causes most noncancerous thyroid nodules to form. A patient with hypothyroidism may also have a thyroid nodule, particularly if the cause is the inflammation known as Hashimoto’sthyroiditis (see Hypothyroidism brochure). Sometimes a lack of iodine in the diet can cause a thyroid gland to produce nodules.
