Thyroidectomy post op

I had a TT about a week ago to determine if nodules were cancer.  They were not.  Thyroid was enlarged and multiple nodules. I am 41 yo female.  I am on 50mcg of Levoxyl.  I am just wondering what to expect now.  I do not want to gain any weight.  I am very worried about that.  I go back to my endo in 3 days.  What is the normal course of action, and what do they try and keep your TSH at? Does the Levoxyl give you all the hormones that your thyroid would normally make?? I am 135 lbs.  My TSH was at .5 prior to surgery. Normal T3 and T4 prior as well.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi,

dr. Lupo normally doesn't answer a question twice.

Dose of levoxyl has to be adjusted individually - some need more and some may need less.

Dr. Lupo is just suggesting that 100 mcg would be a starting dose.  Then you will need to have blood tests every six weeks or so for a while to check your TSH levels.  Target would normally be between 0.5 and 2.5, with most ideal level normally being  close to 1.0.
It can take some time (months) to get on target with levels, so do be patient.

Once TSH is on target, then you will need to be tested about every 6 months as levels can change over time.  If you don't feel good even with TSH at about 1.0 your doc should check FT3 and FT4 to make sure these are also within range.

Hope this helps.

Sorry, I had a total thyroidectomy.  where will 100mcg keep my TSH???  If it was at .5 prior to surgery.  I go back to my endo in 3 days.  Or should I ask what do they try and keep your TSH at to be considered normal.  My biggest concern is weight gain.

Thank you for your help.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Levoxyl (levothyroxine) gives you all the thyroid hormone you need -- if it was a total thyroidectomy, 50mcg will likely not be enough -- usually 100mcg would be a replacement dose for 135 pounds -- would ask your doctor if you need a change.
