hyperthyroid and obeseity?

hi there . I just recieved the news that I have hyperthyroidism . I am scheduled for more testing a thyroid scan and some more blood work . i was sent to an endocrinologist after an abnormal tsh screen with my pcp. the additional bloodwork confirmed the hyperthyoidism. My question is this everything i have found says that it causes weight loss. I have experienced the opposite effect I had a baby recently and gained over 75 pounds during the pregnancy and i seem to keep gaining i have been overweight my whole life but the last couple of years have seen me rise to weight levels of obesity i am near 400 pounds now and 5'9" . So i wonder is this common and will treatment help me to loose weight like it does with people who have hypo ? i dont want to take the chance of gaining anymore weight as you can imagine.

Hi, first of all i'm not a Dr. and I definitely think this is something you should address with your endocrinologist but I'm a thyroid disease sufferer myself and here is what i think:

it's important to remember that having hyper or hypo thyroidism does not mean you will exhibit all of the many symptoms that are sometimes associated with the diseases.... for example, i was diagnosed as being HYPOthyroid even though i'm 5'5" and 105 (under weight.) I exhibit some but not all of the symptoms that are typically associated with being hypo and some of the symptoms i exhibit are oddly hyper-thyroid-ish. I did not lose weight when taking my thyroid medicine, as some might expect.

In my case my thyroid levels are fluctuating a lot due to an autoimmune issue, so while one would assume that if there is a weight correlation between thyroid productivity, that my weight would also go up and down as my hormone levels change, but, it does not.

The main reason that people who are hyper-thyroid tend to lose weight is the increase in heart rate and metabolism, but that does not ALWAYS correlate to weight loss (think of if you drank too much coffee... you may get heart palpitations, but it might not lead to weight loss)  I do not think you need to be concerned about thyroid treatment causing you to gain more weight... in fact I would venture to imagine that stabilizing your thyroid one way or another will help you. When the thyroid is involved often the balance of other hormones are also involved as well! (Also you recently had a baby and that obviously can throw your hormonal balance way out of whack too and that might be another reason for the difficulty in weight loss; this happens to many women!)

Lastly... Hyperthyroid and hypothyroid problems are often symptoms of other problems so it is good that you are working with an endocrinologist so you can find out WHY you are having the thyroid issue to begin with, that might shed some light on why you are having such a tough time managing your weight as well.... once your thyroid problem is under control (whatever it ends up being), hopefully it will be easier to manage the weight issue as well.

Good luck with everything and... please keep us updated :)

My Dr is saying he thinks I have hyperthyroidism I have many symptoms but wasnt checked for thyroid problems untill my hair started falling out. They are sending me to a specialist to have more tests done.I always thought hyperthyroidism =skinny to but in my case it isnt so either. It took me over 3 years to lose 75 pounds thats with eating right and 2 hours of exercise on most days.Iam now almost normal weight according to my BMI but my weight still seems to go up and down even when I dont change anything.I would like to lose more weight but it seems to be getting harder.I was also told people with hyperthyroidism have a increased hunger so maybe thats the cause to.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Some patients do gain weight with hyperthyroidism and it is probable that there is another additional cause of the obesity.  Treating the hyperthyroidism may not impact the weight in any significant way but it is important to treat as hyperthyroidism can cause bone loss and heart problems.
