possible thyroid problem

I'm not sure where this question fits best.  I am having recurring instances of a "sore throat," but it's not actually sore, it feels more strained, and my voice gets weaker as the day goes on (I don't have a job where I have to speak hardly at all, and I don't sing, yell or do anything like that).  I sometimes get what I'd describe as butterflies in the lower right side of my neck, which is very weird.

My thyroid also feels extremely solid.  The entire gland is suddenly somewhat visible now, and can be felt quite prominently.  An ultrasound showed no enlargement, so what would cause it to feel so firm and prominent?  And could the firmness of the thyroid and the strained throat be connected?

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Would start with ENT to evaluate the vocal cords -- the ENT can also feel the thyroid to see if this is potentially a problem.
