nodule found.... history

My name is Nickie and I am 32. I went to my Primary Care Physician about 6 weeks ago ago for a normal visit and he found a lump in my neck. he said he thought it was a thyroid nodule and set up an immediate appointment for an ultrasound on it. he called me on the weekend and told me that it is a nodule and that I have to go for bloodwork and a radioactive iodine scan and that he woul set me up with an appointment to see an endocrinologist.

Here is the ultrasound report....

FINDINGS: Right lobe of thyroid measures 4.9 X 1.6 X 1.9 cm. There is a 2.9 X 1.4 X 1.9 cm heterogenousnodule with increased vascularity seen in the right lobe. In the left lobe there is no mass or nodule seen. Left lobe measures 4.1 X 0.9 X 1.4 cm. Isthmus measures 3mm.

IMPRESSION: Clinical correlation is recommended

Bloodwork results...
TSH 2.37
T4 7.9
Free T4 0.87

and I also have a radioactive iodine scan scan that showed that the nodule is "cold". The endocrinologist's office called me and moved my appointment up from September 29th to this friday, the 8th. My PCP thinks that the endo will do a FNA to check the nodule for cancer.

I did some research this week and found that my rheumatologist had been checking my thyroid almost everytime i went for her bloodwork and got these results...

TSH level....
02/05  0.78
10/05 1.31
10/06 1.35
04/07 1.30
12/07 1.96
07/08 2.37

I know that all the results are withing normal range, but does the slow increase indicate anything or is that normal with age? and with the size of my nodule is it likely that that will remove it wether it comes back as cancerous or not?

Let us know what happened to you.  I'm 38 and just had an uptake scan.  There is a large mass on my right thryoid (cold nodule).  My left thyroid is OK and the thyroid tissue around the mass is "normal."  I am scheduled for a biopsy, too.  However, I don't want a biopsy...I just want it all surgically removed.  I'm so freaked out about it all that I just want it out.  I am praying that you get a good result.  Hopefully, my nodule is benign, as well.  Good luck and post something soon on your results.!
Thanks!

I just turned 32 and had thyroid surgery April 22nd.  I went through the same procedures as you.  I found the lump myself in December and I only had 1 on my left lobe.  My docotor sent me to get it scanned right away.  My results came back cold too, so they sent me off for a biopsie.  The Fna is not that bad. The only thing that was a little difficult for me was that they had to use a larger needle the third time in there - it was slightly  painful but nothing you can't stand.  My results came back suspicious for cancer.  Nothing was definite.  So we set up an appointment right away to take out my left lobe.  If it came back cancerous (while they still had me in surgery) they were going to take out both lobes.  So I went in for surgery and they found it was cancer, so they took them both out.  I didn't have to do the radioactive iodine which I am thankful for but they left it open for me if I ever needed it down the road.

I wish you luck with your results.

I am only 23, and I had a FNA back in 2003. It is not a huge deal but it is quite uncomfortable. Depending on the placement of the nodule. I believe they numbed my throat a little but it was still a little painful. The injection sight will be a little sore for the rest of the day but ice will help reduce the pain and if there is any swelling. I hope all goes well for you!

If nodule has well defined borders and is not fixed to the surrounding tissue it most likely benign.
During the FNA they must get the sample of the nodule tissue, not the blood from the intranodular blood vessel therefore they must use high resolution ultrasound.

labs normal - & have nothing to do w/ nodule.  Next step is FNA.  90-95% of these are benign.
