Graves disease and goiter

U have had a lot of problems in the past couple weeks. I can not eat anything, because I choke.

I have a goiter and my t4 is 3.46

I seen an endocrinologist today and he wants to run tests, then put me on meds, then several months down the line, he wants to do a thryoidectomy.

By the time he does the surgery, I could be dead!
He said the medication will not lessen the size of the goiter, so how am I to eat anything?

I was prescribed propylthiouracil today, and I am to see a surgeon in the morning to discuss surgery options.
I'm a bit afraid of this medication, due to the side affects.

I am going thru many tests right now and I guess my levels are supposed to be controlled before surgery.  My Dr. said that if the surgery is done now, it could be bad on me, but he didn't say how bad or what could happen if surgery is done now.

If the goiter is causing trouble swallowing, then surgery is likely indicated -- the effect of levothyroxine medication in this situation is minimal.
