surprise enlarged thyroid

I recently had an MRI for a neck injury/cervicalgia. The report showed that I have 3 bulging discs which the Dr. I am seeing had suspected. What wasn't expected was the finding that my thyroid is enlarged and that the left lobe extendsbelow the sternum. The spinal surgeon asked me to see my regular Dr. to get it checked out. Had an appt with her yesterday. She ordered a tsh, t3 and a free t4. She is referring me to an endocrinologist for a thyroid scan and possible biopsy. Is it possible that I have thyroid cancer? I don,t have the lab results back yet but can pass them on when I do get them back.

Would have a thyroid ultrasound (not nuclear scan -- unless the TSH is low) and depending on the ultrasound findings, we sometimes need CT scan of chest to fully evaluate goiters/nodules that extend substernally.  Most of these are bengin, but FNA biospy is needed.
