thyroid problems/no medication!!

Hello Doctor,
I am a 38 year old woman from the UK and i have been having thyroid problems with hypothyroid symptoms for the past 2 years, I also have a multinodular goitre. I saw an endocrinologist in october last year and i was refused medication because my thyroid function test was considered "normal" (results were as follows:-
Serum TSH level 2.60, Serum free T4 12.3 and thyroid peroxidase levels 1000
I was also anemic due to heavy, irregular periods.
I recently went for another blood test because i did not feel well and the results are
serum TSH level 4.38, Serum T4 level 9.2 (assume peroxidase is the same as i was not tested) I am still being refused treatment!! Is there anything that i can buy over the counter that will make me feel human again? Is there anything that i can buy in america that i cannot get in the UK? I am going to florida in October. I am fed up feeling like a 90 year old woman and am desperate to get someone to take me seriously. All my family assume i am fine as i have not been given medication and i am beginning to question whether Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is a serious enough condition to warrant me moaning about!!! Thank you in advance for your valuable comments.

You are hypo. What is the range for your serum T4, I bet you are near the bottom.
I had a TSH of 4.1 in Jan 2004 and felt unwell. By the time they retested it in July 2005 it was 53 and I was dead on my feet. I am still struggling to get back to my former health.
If I was you I would insist on a trial of thyroxine starting at 25mcg in order to get your TSH down to around 1 and your serum T4 at least in the upper half of the range.
If that fails you could go and see Dr Peatfield who treats outside the normal protocol. However, he cannot write prescriptions as he has resigned from the GMC.
The last option is to buy levo off the internet from the US but self treating is risky. Your best bet would be to push it with your Doctor or an open minded endo so that you can be monitored properly.
Good luck to you. Please do not give up, do something because it can get a LOT worse.

It appears you have Hashimoto's with mild thyroid failure.  Given the symptoms and the goiter, a trial of medication is indicated -- would usually use prescription levothyroxine in this case.

Selenium 200mcg/day can help decrease antibodies and would be the only over-the-counter suggestion.

You could see a doctor in the US, but it would be difficult to regulate the situation long-distance and have a consistent supply of medication.
