buzzing in ears/ tsh and t3 level

Hello,  I have two questions for you:

1.  Why is it that the endocronologists I have seen all state that the buzzing in my ears is NOT related to the hashimotos low thyroid problem when it clearly started 5 days after I started levothyroxine.  There are statements on the levo web site from people who have had the same problem.  Buzzing / tinnitus starting right after taking levo.  I dont understand why these doctors say there is no correlation?

2.  IF my TSH is 7.93  and my T3 is low,  when My Tsh becomes in normal range should my T3 come up as well?

THank You

HELP!@

It is HORRIBLE.  There is another gal this board that has the same problem.  Its a no win situation.  If we dont take any thyroid we suffer with hypothyroidism.  If we take any type of thyroid (and we have tried all of them) it almost puts us in a septic shock.  We have tried .15, .25, 37.5  and even .50 of every known thyroid.  The more we take the worse we get.  If we are on thyroid it is almost impossible to function.  Exactly 5 hours after we take the thyroid regardless of what it is, our body almost has a mini stroke.  Heart races for about 4 hours, shakey, horrible horrible electricity feeling in one ear, hands go numb, nausea, irritable like you would not believe.  There is nothing to do but cry and pray until it passes.

If we do not take anything, we are exhausted, shakey, back hurts, sweaty, ears have tinnitus, feet hurt etc.

Always with an electrical feeling in one ear.

All of our hormones are within range (t3, t4, tsh).

We have had every single test known to mankind.  In fact I had a brain scan yesterday just to make sure (my third one this year) it was not something else.

It gets worse every day.  It is not from out of ranges, wrong meds,

I went to the mayo clinic and they couldnt figure it out.

People keep saying that if we keep taking the meds it will get better.  Its now been 8 weeks and every day it gets worse.  the more saturated with just a little bit of meds we are, the worst off we are.  People take 125, 137 and even 200mcg of thyroid and feel great.  We get near the stuff and we have the worst reaction you can imagine.

There is also another girl that posted on a texas board that has the same problem.

Waking up in the morning is the worst as well.  If i am on any type of thyroid, its like waking up drugged or drunk.  Its horrible.

has anyone ever heard of this?

I have the ringing ears and buzzing in my head as well.  I am doing really good on Levothroid, but it seems as my levels stabilize the head buzzing ringing gets worse.....I don't know but maybe as the levels to your brain increase its waking up????? Okay, made ya giggle......

I had Hashitoxicosis......my thyroid went through a really hyper phase before giving out....It was like the burnout phase of my Hashi's before I was to become hypothyroid with it.  I experienced all the symptoms of Hyperthyroid.  They put me on a low iodine diet for a couple of weeks and it stopped.....Then I had my thyroidectomy and it was really really swollen the surgeon said, so she confirmed I was in toxicosis.  They even held my first doses of T4 for about a week after surgery to clear my own out of my system.  Hope that helps......

I have found all of these things take time to adjust.....I feel awful, but lately am having more good days than bad days and any new symptoms I know that my body is just adjusting to the meds.

Good luck to you....

Hi, I am just curious as to what Hashitoxosis is? I know that we have alot of the same symptoms and I was diagnosed with Graves with hypothroid? Never knew that was even possible. Thanks for the ringing ears hopeful solution.

Dr. Mark,

One more question.  I know that some endos do not believe in this, but I assure you that this is what is happening to me.

Hashitoxosis

I am hypo but keep getting these bouts of hyperness.  They are becomming more and more frequent and intense.

May I ask what your views are on this, and if you believe in this, how long should i expect this torture to linger on?

thank you,
bruce in Dallas

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
change to a different manufacturer of levothyroxine -- not to a 'natural" or armour.

when you say "brand"  do you mean like "armour"  or natural, or change to synthroid as opposed to generic?

thank you!

1 - it is not a common problem, but sometimes happens. Changing to a different brand sometimes helps....

2 - bringing TSH into normal range with levothyroxine normalizes T3 levels in most cases.
