I was just diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer - any advice?

Back in April, I posted my symptoms.  My family doctor didn't think my symptoms were related to my thyroid, and prescribed 200 mg. of progesterone.  I then started taking Selenium and my energy seemed to improve a little.

Now that I've had a biopsy, the Endocrinologist says it is definitely cancer and recommends thyroid surgery.  Needless to say I am nervous.  I have read articles that say thyroid cancer is over-diagnosed and over-treated.  They seem to say that people die WITH thyroid cancer but most not FROM thyroid cancer.  I am in my early 60's, and really do not want surgery.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
