I was vomiting violently after 4 glasses of wine. Mind you, this was over 5 hours and dinner. More than I have had in a long, long time. I can see being tipsy or even truly impaired, but I was violently ill for hours and unable to walk etc. The following day I noticed I could not taste a thing, not even hot sauce directly on my tongue and I had a fever. These symptoms lasted for days! I already can't drink beer at all, because of the incredible headaches that seem to follow the first sip. I have Hashimoto's and I do believe there is a link. I have no desire to drink........ none. But, I do hope that I can still handle a strawberry margarita from time to time.
I like sambucca and port. Had only 3 shots of sam at office xmas party over 4 hours with dinner, along with a huge Voss sparkling water. Never was tipsy. Got up in the middle of the night to pee and proceeded to pass out on my ceramic tile bathroom floor. I was able to grab the towel rack as I was going down, so didn't hit hard. Apparently didn't make enough noise to wake anyone else up, so got myself up and was trying to make it 10 feet down the hall to the couch when "bam," down again, only no warning this time. Smashed my head on the hardwood floor and put a dent in the wall with my knee. That one got everyone up in a hurry!!!
So they "shut me off" sam. But port is causing my acid reflux to kick up, even when on Protonix, so I'm guessing I can't drink without consequences anymore, either.
Not doing very well with caffeine, either. Coffee aggravates the acid reflux (which I never had until thyroid issues), and any kind of caffeine causes me to grind my teeth and clench my muscles all night so I wake up unable to straighten up for about 10 minutes!!!
This thyroid business is NO FUN!!!
Thank you. I had a TT on 7/29 and last week had my first glass of red wine (my favorite)
it made me throw up and I got a headache. Red wine has been my beverage for 5 years. Hello Grey Goose.
As of late, I feel sick after a few drinks of anything--it's almost as though I can't handle alcohol anymore (and I just graduated from college, so I used to be able to handle alcohol! Heh heh...). It's weird.....
I have the same issues. I cant drink any sort of wine and it is such a shame because my hubby is in the wine and spirits industry and we have 10 house fulls of liquor!! You know what I can drink without issues?? Champagne!!!
Mead is honey wine.....the vikings were big into it.
My favorite is orange blossom honey...I toss in a bunch of mint and cinnamon. Good goll will that knock you on your keister in a hurry!!
I have my days.. sometimes I can't even sip a glass and some days - like yesterday I can drink a whole bottle.
Thanks for your comments guys - yes I was wondering about the sulfites but it is a strange coincidence that this intolerance set in about the same time as my thyroid problems.
Someone suggested organic wine might be worth a try.
kitty - I'm not too keen on the oakey aged wines anyway so I do try to avoid them but I am def worse with reds. Don't touch them any more at all but I do LOVE a glass of really nice white wine.
AR - I used to LIVE on White Zinfandel when I was a 'hostie' and flying to the US every week or so - loved them!! And I am no hick ;) !!
purrballs - mead? Sounds interesting! I remember it from my history lessons they used to drink it at feasts? Does it have honey or something in it mixed with alcohol?
J x
I can drink pale wines, but not a Chablis (sp?) or anything resembling a red wine. Instant headache. Sulfites or tannins or whatever, I am not able to tolerate it.
White Zinfandel is tasty (some of it), but I'm a hick with no refinement.
:o)
Wine has always done this to me...I assumed it's the sulfites because I drink everything else with no problem and even homebrew and make mead.
It could be the sulfites in the wine. This is well known to cause migraine headaches.
Does it matter if it is red or white wine? Or aged in Oak? Oak gives the wine tannins which can also contribute to migraines.
Vodka is the "cleanest" of all alcohol. It has no additives and is known to not give quite the same hangover effect as other alcohols.
