Alternative to thyroid surgery

I have had thyroid nodules for a number of years, and have been diagnosed with a nontoxic colloidal goiter.  About 14 years ago, I had one half of my thyroid removed because it had grown so big that it was interfering with my T-shirts.  I am on no thyroid meds.  Saw an endocrinologist this week and she is recommending that the other half be removed, even though it is functioning.  It is beginning to cause me to cough, and my voice goes all wonky once in a while.  She says that it is pressing on the blood vessels in my neck, and will start causing sleep apnea.

I'm wondering if there are any alternatives.  Will doses of iodine or desiccated thyroid cause it to shrink?  My best friend is trying to send me to an alternative health practitioner, but she is of the mind that all doctors are evil and herbs will cure anything.  Obviously, I don't want to have surgery, but I also don't want to wait too long, since I have met my medical deductible for this year.

Any suggestions?

Just had bloodwork done yesterday, so I'll know in a few days.  But I will definitely look into the other two procedures.  Thanks!

what is your TSH level?
As far as non-surgical treatment you have option to do PEI or new laser ablation.
in your case surgery may damage blood vessels or voice nerves during nodule removal
