I have been  on Synthroid for 27 years after having radioactive thyroid treatment.  I was 29 years old at the time I started and was going through divorce.  I also had flawless skin as a teen and blamed my new acne on stress.  Well, I am in my late 50s now and my chin is a mass of cystic acne.  My levothyroxine dose was recently increased and so did my acne. It is really embarrassing being a professional health care worker trying to hide my cystic bumps with make up. I decided to investigate the correlation with the increase of thyroid med and increase of acne and low and behold, through everyone's commentary, I feel better knowing that I may have found the source and can now discuss with my health care provider.

I always had pretty good skin up until about 6 months ago.  That's when these cystic-like ance started (mainly around my mouth/jaw/cheeks).  I literally have tried EVERYTHING.  So I went to doctor and they prescribed me an antibiotic which did not phase the acne.  After looking into everything I eat and take medicine wise...I do honestly believe that my Synthroid has been causing it all.

About 6 months ago my Synthroid had been raised to 200mcg.  I had my blood tested the same day I got the antibiotics...and my levels came back normal.  In the past I had been on a combination of Cytomel and Snythroid (and had some left over scripts stuffed away).  I went off Cytomel when I was pregnant (I guess there isn't a lot of info on Cytomel and pregnancy...thats what the docs wanted me to do)...and thats when the docs kept raising my Snythroid.  2 weeks ago I started taking my Cytomel 25 and Synthroid 112.  My face IS clearing up (except the scars from the old acne) and I don't feel any coming on.  I have been tanning to try and help my face as well because it's been downright awful.  I am going to give it one more week and schedule an appt with my doctor and tell him what I have been taking.  He can check my blood then and see if it needs adjusted...but 200mcg of Snythroid was causing my acne (in my own trial and error research).

Acne with thyroid issues is almost always associated with an imbalance of high testosterone - high progesterone - and abnormal estrogen levels usually low - but in some cases high too.

More often than not you are producing too much testosterone from a spill off of the high progesterone turning into testosterone too.

Relation when this is fact is the adrenals have overproduced and cortisol issues are present also - but rarely considered at a doctors office who only goes by reference blood labs and not saliva to pin point the fatigue.

Also and sorry to add more bad news, Your thyroid meds are backfiring or not doing its complete job and you are still not utilizing thyroid hormone correctly either.

Thanks for the sharing guys! really appreciate it....
I hv been on the medicine for like 2 years, but still the hormone going up and down. So, i still taking the propylthiracil up to now. Sigh.....
Maybe I should watch on my diet too... But sometimes it's hard to control our eating habits as we eat whatever we like.

I've been on Levoxyl since 2004.  Never had a problem with acne until this past year.  Seeing a new endo on Monday and will discuss.  I believe there may be something else going on like PCOS.

Nope! But it takes time for the medicine to settle the levels.
