Calcification

Male/late 20s.
Last week I had an x-ray of my c-spine done because of constant neck pain from an old whiplash injury.  The spine looked normal, but there was a large calcification right behind where my thyroid/thyroid cartilage is.  The height looks to be about 2 vertebrae.  The doc didn't know if this was normal or not so he's sending me for an MRI.  I've looked at other c-spine x-rays and read that ossification of the thyroid cartilage was normal, but when I compare the x-rays of my neck to others, the calcification looks very 'bright' and a lot larger.  I've previously been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and have an enlarged thyroid lobe and a nodule.  Also have a lump on the side of my neck about the size of a pencil eraser.  I also seem to have the urge to clear my throat constantly.  I guess my question is, does anyone know what the calcification could be from?  Thanks for any input.

In my search for what my calcification could be from, I learned that it could be a natural result from inflammation and harmless or from cancer.  Mine was the latter in the thyroid.

Thanks for the responses.
I have an ultrasound scheduled for next week.  Another thing I've been reading about is alcohol induced pain in lymph nodes.  When I drink alcohol, I get a really bad pain where the swollen lump/lymph node is on the side of my neck(I think it's a cervical lymph node).  My GP told me it's probably heart burn.....which I've never really had, and sound weird to me, and also to not worry about the lump.  I guess I'll just have to wait for the MRI results.

Please ask your doctors for a thyroid ultrasound - this should show if the calcification is inside your thyroid and whether it is associated with any nodule.

Something happened to my connection--answer lost.

You can have a calcium deposit form on bones that have been injured.  Your doctor will be able to tell you more after the MRI.  I had a concussion and my skull cracked open--I have a calcium lump where my skull was fractured.
