Can Hashimoto's Thyroiditis symptoms correct themselves

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's 5 years ago and was medicated for the first 3 years.  I have not taken my medication for the past 2 years and was told after my last blood test  (2 months ago) that my levels were all normal.
I was told by my doctor that i would have to be on medication for the rest of my life as Hashimoto's is something you will have for life.  I do not like taking medication so i stopped and 2 years on my levels are all normal.  Has anyone else experienced this.

I'm not a doc, but remember that Hash's isn't the same as regular hypo/underactive/low thyroid. It's an autoimmune disorder, so there are antibodies involved rather than just thyroid level issues like many people have. I've read about consequences from untreated Hashimoto's disease, such as myxedema coma, so I'm all for being treated, also given that I and my mom both have thyroid problems going back some time. If things clear up, so be it, but I'm young and don't feel like playing thyroid roulette.

My mom was on  thyroid replacement for 18 years, and then went  into a normal range, she's remained normal  and off meds for the last 28. Unfortunately I didnt inherit that.
