Curly Hair and Hypothyroid

For the last six months, I've been suffering with being extremely hot and and sweating all the time.  Also my straight hair turned curly.  Several weeks ago I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and started Synthyroid.    My symptoms have subsided.  Im hoping my hair will go back to being straight.  My question is, had anyone ever experienced their hair going from straight to curly or vise versa due to hypothyroidism.

Just being within the so-called "normal range" does not mean the test results are adequate for you.   The ranges are far too broad to be functional for everyone.  What are the actual test results and reference ranges shown on the lab report?

Yes!! I had straight hair that turned curly after taking thyroid meds. It’s so bizarre. However, I believe the answer is due to the level of dryness in the hair which tends to tighten and pull the hair because of the loss of elasticity. Is your hair also much dryer and brittle than it used to be? Mine certainly is.

Your hair should not be dry and brittle when taking thyroid med.  It is likely that you are not being prescribed an adequate dosage.  What med are you taking and what is the daily dosage?  What, if any, other symptoms do you have?  Also, please post your thyroid related test results and reference ranges shown on the lab report.
My tests for t3 and t4 come out normal according to my doctor. I take 175 mcg and 150mcg every other day. But I still have many of the symptoms of hypothyroid. Lethargy, hair loss, weight gain, difficulty losing weight, sensitivity to heat and cold, extreme sweating, heavy menses and depression. I take birth control to help with the menses and antidepressants for the depression but it all still comes and goes.

I was diagnosed with Hashimotos in my late teens.  Im not sure it's the  related but my fine, thin pin straight hair started getting wavy in my early 30s.  It gets curler as time goes by.

Thank you for your comment.  It does seem that since I have been taking the snythroid, my hair has not been quite as unruly curly as it had been.  Hopefully as I continue with the medication, my hair will become totally straight again!!!  And the being hot and sweaty will also stop.  Thanks again!

My mother's curly hair has turned pretty straight and she has Hashimoto's thyroiditis. She hasn't started treatment yet.

I've never heard of either hypothyroidism or Synthroid changing the curliness/straightness of anyone's hair.  Mine always was/still is straight as a sting.  I haven't taken Synthroid for a while now, but even when I did it didn't change that.
