Hi - I read your comments to Annette24.  I was wondering I was just switched from Levoxyl to Armour Thyroid.  I was taking 225mg. of Levoxyl and am now taking 90 grains of Armour twice a day.  After about a month of taking Armour I started noticing problems with my eyes - sensitive to light, I get dizzy trying to focus, I can't stare or keep my eyes focused for too long a period without looking away or opening my eyes wide.  I went to my eye dr. and he thought it was from my thyroid either not being on correct dosage or the Armour Thyroid pill.  Do you or anyone know if this problem is caused by Armour Thyroid. Thanks

I smoked for over thirty years.  Quit cold turkey when dia with thyroid and other health issues. I contribute my slight TED to the quitting of smoking when I did. I truly believe if I wasn't a smoker or if I had quit years earlier I would not have TED.  I also believe my TED would have been worse if I continued smoking.

It would be the ideal health situation if you would quit smoking and find other means to deal with your stress.  There are plenty of stop smoking aids,  even internet forums for others to help each other get through the rough spots. And lot of ways to deal with stress. When you want a cig. reach for something else (besides food LOL!) although, my sister sucked on red hots and I sucked on mints because it cooled off my hot throat. Other than that it was a whiz for me.
Read the below sites and see if they will help convince you to stop.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF SMOKING?
Cyanidem, found in tobacco smoke, interferes with thyroid hormone production
Hyper- and Hypothyroidism. Cyanidem, found in tobacco smoke, interferes with thyroid hormone production. Smoking triples the risk for developing thyroid disease, particularly autoimmune hyper- and hypothyroidism. Women smokers with subclinical hypothyroidism, a symptom-free condition in which the thyroid gland is mildly underactive, face an increased risk for developing full-blown hypothyroidism than their nonsmoking peers. Smoking may also increase the negative effects of hypothyroidism on the heart. Smoking has also been linked to goiter, a swelling of the thyroid that occurs in people who dont get enough iodine.

Smoking significantly increases risk for thyroid disease, particularly autoimmune Hashimoto's thyroiditis and postpartum thyroiditis. Chemicals in cigarette smoke called thiocyanates appear to have specifically harmful effects on the thyroid. Smoking also increases the negative effects of hypothyroidism, notably on the arteries and heart.

What is thyroid eye disease? Who gets thyroid eye disease? What can be done to help?
http://www.mydr.com.au/default.asp?article=3402

PurposeTo evaluate the epidemiological evidence for a causal association between tobacco smoking and thyroid eye disease (TED).
ConclusionThis systematic review provided strong evidence for a causal association between smoking and development of TED. Current-smokers were also more likely to experience disease progression or poorer outcome of treatment. Patients with Graves' disease and the general public should be educated about the risk of smoking and TED. These findings suggest that patients with Graves' disease or TED who are smokers should be given effective support to stop smoking.Eye advance online publication, 15 September 2006 doi:10.1038/sj.eye.6702603.

Can thyroid eye disease be prevented?  Will my eyes get worse?  What can be done about thyroid eye disease?  Will the eyes go back to normal?
Am I likely to lose my sight?  Should I see an eye specialist (ophthalmologist)?

If you do have TED, it sounds like the early stages and it doesn't necessarily mean it will get any worse.  Mine hasn't gotten any worse since it first popped up in 2000.
You don't necessarily have to have Hashi or Graves' to have TED thyroid eye disease.  Thyroid eye disease has its own antibodies that attack the eyes just as autoimmune thyroid antibodies attack the thyroid. Although the two antibodies are very close, some calling them cousins.  None of the treatment options will avoid the eye disease if you develop it. TED can attack the eyes at any time and as many times as it likes.  The only way to minimize any risk is to keep our stress.  By keeping stress down levels down and the symptoms will be less severe. However keeping stress levels down does not guarantee that we will not end up with severe TED. And stop to smoking!
Some people develop TED when they take animal-based extracts such as Armour, because the immune system  react to foreign proteins found in glandular extracts. Synthetic meds. doesn't cause this problem.

Symptoms include: inflammation of the eye tissues. The eyes are painful, red and watery - particularly in sunshine or wind. The covering of the eye is inflamed and swollen. The lids and tissues around the eyes are swollen with fluid. The eyeballs bulge out of their sockets. Because of eye muscle movement, the eyes are unable to move normally and there may be blurred or double vision.

See an ophthalmologist soon as possible. You will probably be a "wait and see" patient which is very common. Usually there is nothing  nothing done about TED even if  there are early signs of TED because doctors do not do anything at first.  They prefer to wait and watch. Well-trained doctors wait and watch through a year and a half or so of "hot phase". But it's good for an ophthalmologist to have baseline readings for your eye measurements so they have some way to quantify the changes. Then you'll have an established relationship and the doctor will know where your eyes started.
Another way to tell for sure is to get a photograph from a couple years ago, and compare with now.
However if you are currently hyperthyroid, the slightly larger-looking eyes might be due to excessive levels of thyroid hormone

Use artificial tears, lubricating eye drops with natural ingredients /no preservatives, not something that gets the red out those can be more drying to the eyes and use them liberally (some people use them every fifteen minutes when using the computer or walking in a breeze, anything that is particularly hard on the eyes).
Sunglasses they sell for cataract patients are great for keeping light out.
I wear sunglasses rain or shine, sometimes inside as you said Florissant lights are madding, and I wear them waterskiing, swimming, and my other water sports.
Some take flaxseed (omega-3 )for eye liberation, grapeseed extract 100 mg  twice daily protect against free radical damage and to help improve circulation and strengthen blood vessels and  benefit TED . It's a great antioxidant.
I take 300 mg twice a day.
Silver is also involved in suppressive functions such as suppressing fibroblast growth and  an extremely good reason for those suffering from TED to take a colloidal silver supplement (follow directions on the bottle)..  colloidal silver has been reported by others to  help other ailments as well , although very expensive.
Make sure your eyes are getting plenty of rest,  striving for 8 hours of sleep.
Incorporating stress reduction techniques to minimize the effects of stress and avoid environmental triggers.
Follow a nutrient-rich diet, avoiding sugar and saturated fats.
Adding yogurt with L. acidophilus to your diet. Cooked spinach and spinach, as well as supplements containing lutein are important for general eye health and help in preventing macular degeneration. Vitamin C, using 500-1000 mg, along with 15 mg beta carotene, 400 IU of vitamin E, and 50 mg zinc are all important for eye health. Supplemental copper should be used in people who are also hyperthyroid, using a ratio of 3:1 for zinc:copper. For light-sensitive eyes, add B vitamins. Experts recommend taking 25 to 50 mcg of B1, 25 to 100 mg of B2 and 1,000-1,2000 mcg of vitamin B12 daily. A 100 mg tablet of B complex is generally sufficient and, with the addition of 1,000 mg of flaxseed oil, will also prevent eye dryness. For light sensitivity, eyeglasses that block UVA and UVB rays should be worn year round between 10 am and 2 pm even on cloudy days. Certain medications increase light sensitivity, including aspirin, oral contraceptives and many antibiotics, and many medications, including antihistamines, contribute to eye dryness and its associated symptoms of tearing.
