I take ferrous sulphate and it works wonders. Tablets are not absorbed easily and you can get constipation. I am a chronic anaemic so without it I pass out!
Do make sure you get your doc's permission on this though, as even the supplement can be too much for some people and the dose may need to be adjusted. I take 30mls daily and it is the optimum for me, but others would need 15mls and be at a good level. Since I am so bad in low ferritin I need more than most people.
Hi,
Thanks for the response. Well, when you are hypothyroid, it is common to be low Ferritin because you are low in T3 which aids in digestion. I am now taking Beatine HCL with meals and adding in red meat, more greens, etc. However, apparently you have to be between 70-90 to tolerate thyroid hormone properly. Kidney and liver function is fine. So I guess Iron supplements it is :). I take all the Vit C, B, etc. you have on your list. My B12 is actually really good.
Hi,
Is the low ferritin level explained by a condition? If your diet adequately supplies it and you do not have an underlying disorder like liver or kidney disease, then supplementing is advisable -under a Dr's supervision if possible. Keep in mind there is usually a cause for low ferritin levels -some of them very serious with long-lasting effects.
Personally, I found liquid iron (not very tasty but rapidly effective), vitamin B complex (emphasis on B-1, B-6, B-12), folic acid and vitamin C (1000 mg+) the most effective. The best (and most absorbed) iron comes from red meat sources. I hope this helps! ~MM
