Final Biopsy Results ...... 2 nodules benign .. 2 small areas Papillary Carcinom

that are encapsulated and were on the GLAND not the benign nodules.. Spoke briefly w/surgeon on phone at 9:00 AM when he called and will talk more on Monday appt.

He said one was small 4mm the other even smaller .. he used the words "R we going to race to take out other thyroid ..no"  .. then said, "I wouldn't say you have Cancer, but we will discuss more on MOnday and keep in mind 30% of those who are autopsied that die of other reasons have this in their gland".

OK .. I'm OK with this and it is what my hunch suspected all along .. I KNEW THIS WOULD SHOW UP .. I KNEW it for some unknown reason.

My concern, of course, is that the other lobe has a 2mm nodule on it .. will he suggest thyroid uptake scan, petscan, reg. ultrasound, biopsy or just wait and watch ?  What do you guys think.

Again .. two diff. type of Cancer .. the nodules were atypical follicular and the gland revealed two areas of (I think he used the word encapsulated) papillary carcinoma.

What advice can you offer in way of ?'s and concerns .. I'm ok with all this and so glad the 1/2 the thyroid is out but still have this *pesky* other side in and that haunting unknown future.

UGH ............................am I doing the Happy Dance .. you bet I still am .. could have been terrible news .. this isn't 100% great but one to deal with.  Just wish I had more info on what it means for future, etc.

Is this what others had come back after their surgery, too?

He kept saying 4mm is small .. I guess it is .. Ikeep saying that is the size of my kidney stone ROTFLOL!!

You KNOW I'll be watching this board for your results ... the surgery will be ok .. it is the {{{waiting}}} that is 10X harder.

If we take off atypical skin moles 1-2-3 to rid ourselves of cancer risk that is what made me decide 1-2-3 to rid myself of thyroid cancer risk by a 1/2 thyroidectomy for my atypical follicular cells.  I know it is scary, but sometimes a wait and see approach is too laid back . . . I'm not a Dr., but I am certainly glad my Dr's said to have it off w/o a doubt and the pathologist recommened excision.

What did your pathologist recommend?  That is a key factor in your decision.

I am so glad to have helped you .................up until 9 weeks ago I hardly knew what a thyroid did in one's body .. this is all so new to me.

Hugs and best of luck as you do some "soul searching" my friend, ANYTIME you post ok??

My FNA came back suspicious for papillary cancer with 3 nodules on right side & 1 on left side.  That plus the fact I have Graves Disease, my endo and surgeon both recommended a TT.  After surgery, I found out that I had a 8mm papillary cancer tumor.  It was weird knowing I had cancer but the problem was taken care of already.  I don't regret for a second having a TT.  I'm even going through RAI to make sure those pesky little cancer cells don't come back in the future.  Since my tumor was <1cm, some doctors don't recommend RAI, but my endo said the thyroglobin test to determine if your cancer has come back only works if you've had RAI.  No brainer in my book...I'll live with the sucky LID for a few weeks and a few days isolation, just to know I've done everything humanly possible to regain my health back!!!

Cheryl,

I wish I could have given my my surgeon, who was very meticulous and kind, and listened to me when I said I wanted to be agressive in my treatment and to yank the whole thing out.  I just didn't want to have to endure 2 surgeries.  But now that you know what to expect, if you have to have the other side removed at least fear of the unknown won't be a problem.  That was the worst part for me, plus the waiting!!! Wishing you a speedy recover.  Just know we are all here for you to provide support.  Sendng you a big e-hug and a "There, there...everything will be alright" pat on the back!

You were a very brave woman and I can feel your strength .. what an encouragement for all of us on this board to hear your story!!

The gameplan was a total thyroidectomy if Cancer had shown up but my preliminary results were benign (the tiny carcinoma was found on the gland and not the 2 nodes).

I *wonder* what they would have done on the table if the final report was caught at the lab early on but hindsight is 20/20 and my surgeon feels at this point it is best to have only 1/2 out as the other half is functioning ok and probably has been functioning for many yrs with the nodes on the other side and goiter interferring with its functioning.

I just wonder what they will do for future to ensure this 2mm node and anything else in that other lobe is okay.  I'm not overwhelmed by it but one of those background things that just linger in your mind ev. 6 mos waiting for an ultrasound I guess.

I'm sorry to hear about your results. We haven't spoken before but I have been following your prognosis. I've kind of been silent in the background. This truly is an informative and friendly site. It's great to see all the support. I've been following your prognosis because I to have nodules in the background of a goiter. I've had "atypical follicular cells" seen in my first biopsy. My second biopsy came back as "benign". Now seeing your diagnosis since your surgery is making me think I might be wise to be more aggressive about my thyroid. Maybe the wait and see isn't the best thing to do. It's seems to be such a guessing game. How fustrating!
Thank you for sharing your story on this site. Without even knowing it you have been helping me with decisions about my own thyroid. Well I just want to wish you the best of health and a speedy recovery.

Take Care,
