GERD+Hypo

Hi again!  Does anybody know if gas/belching is caused or can be caused by hypothyroidism, and if so, does it go away when TSH levels are good and you are on the correct dosage of meds?

I am currently on 175mcg of Synthroid.  B4 the 175mcg I was taking two pills to total 162 mcg.  AT THAT TIME, my TSH came back a great .45 with my FT4 at 1.08.  Now, these were really good I thought & I was feeling better.  My doc was kind and looked at my T4 (not FT4 but T4) levels which still flagged a bit low.  With that being low and the fact that I had to buy two different meds with separate co-pays, she increased my dosage only by 12 mcg to the 175mcg.  Now, we assumed that this would decrease my TSH levelS.  Anyway, after 4 weeks I feel almost worse.  NOT HYPER BY ANY MEANS, but my gas/belching is horrendous again, just like it was when I was too high of a TSH.  I am depressed, tired, lightheaded & oh yes, my periods came back in January but now don't have one.

I am due to be re-tested next week for my FT4 & TSH levels.

Does any of this go away??????  I am fearful of taking Simethicone (Gas-x) which seems to work for me, or Protonix which doc prescribed because I've heard they change the acidity in your stomach and inhibit the absorption of the synthroid.

Can anybody shed some light?  Also, no stupid weight loss and I've really been exercising faithfully every single day- mod-fast walking uphill on a treadmill for 90 minutes EVERY DAY.  I've lost 6 lbs. approx but no more!!  HELP ME PLEASE!!  When do things get better??

not just the meds causing the GERD - it IS hypothyroid -  The digestive system slow down and acid build up. The slower you are the more acid and it is proven.

Yogurt and Probiotics will alevate this if it is just a hypo situation. It had helped me alot - but I also could be looking at other thryoid issues causing my grief.

Good Luck

I have had hypothyroidism since 2003. Recently I noticed thryoid was enlarged.  My doctor increased Synthoid dosage and since then I have had GERD with horrible heart burn and lots of belching. I believe the medication caused it  but doctor says one has nothing to do with the other. I disagree!!!  Doctors do not know everything, that is why they call it practice.  Now I am on omeprazole 20 mg twice a day and it has helped some.  Last TSH check showed thyroid overactive now!  Doctor decreased dosage slightly.  I have never had GERD or such problems with belching before in my life.   Pain so bad that I went to ER one night because I thought I was having heart attack!  I have chest and back pain and vomiting. It was very frightening. I actually thought I was going to die!  Anyway, I do believe that Synthroid has caused my GERD problem. I have to see ENT also for thyroid.  Had ultrasound and had nodule. Had FNB and so far no cancer cells.  Take care and hope you feel better soon.

sweet thing,

You are possibly mixing me up with some one else.  This is not my problem nor (a)my thyroid problem, however if that was just the extent of my problems I would be very healthy happy.
My post's are meant as a informational messages and not as "ad"s.

i wa reading your ad and let me tell you that i am so glad that i heard someone anyone say that it happens to them to becouse i experience alot of gas and bloating and i personally think that my medication makes things worse but mydoctor tells me it doesnt work like that. Now, i wil tell you that protonix, nexium, and all those other meds do not help me when my thyroid level is out of wack. I have only had hypothyroidism for 1 Yr. and it is the most ugly feeling in the world it seems like nothing in my body works the same.

has any one else noticed that they don't take in the same amount of oxygen when their thyroid is low? If my thyroid is low i don't talk as loud and i can tell that i'm taking in less oxygen and blood circulation is bad. my doctor thinks no one would be able to tell this but it's pretty obvious to me. just curious

With 10 yrs of internet surfing and being on and/or reading other forums, I have never read an association with gas/belching  with hypothyroid or other thyroid conditions.  However it doesn't mean that its not out there in cyber space, it just means I haven't come across it as yet, and, of course I am not a doctor.  If you haven't already, you might try eating 8oz. of yogurt every day, however the situation will possibly get a little worse before getting better, the yogurt active culture needs to get well into the system before working, possibly 2 weeks. You might have bacteria in your system causing your belching and gas. Yogurt has active culture to fight and rid the system of this type of problem, as long as 8oz. is eaten very day hereafter.

You might take synthroid and Simethicone (Gas-X) or Protonix, opposite ends of the day/night , such as, take synthroid in the AM and take the other at PM or bedtime, or, at least 4 hours apart from each other.

Weight is just about everyone's issue.  Mine has finally stabilized after 10 years and that is with still watching what I eat. Exercise has never helped me lose weight. I find it more helpful for the heart and muscle tone rather then weight loss, unless you are training every day for and running, the 26 mile marathon.;)

Good Luck!

I had been having bad belching and regergitation for about 6 weeks, and I took two tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar (Braggs is easy to find) in 8 oz. of distilled water an hour before evey meal, and it was gone in a day and a half.  I was only going to do it for three days anyhow to test teh theory, but went out unexpectedly for teh day, missed my drinks, and the symptoms were gone, and they haven't come back yet, 5 days.  Anyhow, I have no idea if that will interact in a bad way with your prescription thyroid med's...hmmm.  It's just plain vinegar, so maybe if you call your pharmacist they would know.  I was amazed at how quick it worked!  By the way, it doesn't taste all that good!  Just wanted you to have another option for getting rid of it!

take care, good luck & keep me posted as to what you find out!
