H1N1 vaccine for thyroid patients

Hi, all, many of you know me as a recently diagnosed (August '09) Hashimoto's patient. My levels are almost where they need to be. I have actually not gotten as sick this fall as I have in the previous years, but I do realize that my immunity is still lower than someone without auto-immune disease.

My doctor's office has just announced they have the Swine Flu vaccine. I am supposed to get a shot for myself and my small child tomorrow, but I'm having second thoughts.

I have read a lot of negatives about the H1N1 vaccine, even some really wild conspiracy theories about the government trying to keep population down by putting  poison in the vaccine.

What do you all feel about it?

NOVARTIS H1N1 vaccine uses 25 MCG per dose. Children recieve HALF that, then the next month, the OTHER HALF.

You should ALWAYS ask FOR the ingredients. shoot.. ask for the box. its right on it.

Hope I cleared that up.

Anything else in that nasal spray? My kiddo was sick with fever for two days after her regular flu shot, and I'm worried about a repeat.

BTW - Did you see that the CDC has recalled thousands of kids' vaccines because the vaccines are proven NOT to be effective?

In case any one is worried about thimersol, the intranasal version, which is used for children is thimersol free.  Here's some info from CDC:

Some vaccine manufacturers are producing 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines in single-dose units, which do not require the use of thimerosal as a preservative. In addition, the live-attenuated version of the vaccine, which is administered intranasally (through the nose), is produced in single-units and does not contain thimerosal.

I'm one of those older patients-over 65.  I did get the H1N1 vaccine last week and have not had any adverse affects.  I also got the regular seasonal flu shot earlier in year.

Being over 65, I probably have some protection-according to the CDC, however, with the Hashi and all the other medical problems I have,  I decided to get the injection.  The H1N1 seems to be decreasing in number of cases, but could reoccur again.

I did suggest my son, who works at a hospital, get the H1N1 injection not the nasal as it is a live virus as mentioned above.

I also would like to  put some words  about what I learned on this subject.
I am a Hashimoto's patientfor all my life. I have my seasonal flu shot and pneumonia vaccine for this season with no ill efects except  pain and heaviness in the arm for  a few days I asked  my doctor about swine flu vaccine. He said:  It depends how old you are.
If you're over 65: you get the vaccine through injection on the arm and  it made with dead viruses. And it is safe. He recomended I should get it.
If you are young, you get that through the nose, the vaccine has live virusus.  And you'll be the one decide on that.
Since I am over 65, I think I am going to get it, but I can't find a place to get it.
I hope this info. will help for older patients. I'd  liked to hear how old  those  patiets who wrote that they didn't have ill effects . Thank you.

I had both the seasonal flu shot and the H1N1 shot.  No problems with either.

We had H1N1 also symptoms were not nearly as bad as I expected.  Chills the night could not get warm had 3 heavy blankets and body and head aches, fever the next day but not very high like some people, then came the sore throat.
It was not fun by any means but it was not as bad as it could have been but I thought we had strep took my little girl in and they swabbed her throat and it bled.  Came back neg for strep and pos for flu so they gave us tamiflu.

I had the flu vaccine for 7 years in a row and each year I got Broncitis and Pneumonia.
I stopped the fluvax 10 years ago and have not had the flu once or pneumonia.
I dont get any vaccines now ...no matter how much they tell you that they arent live.
There is a lot of controversy here in Oz about that swine flu vaccine with people saying not enough trials were done on it and that it contains lethal amounts of mercury.
Whether this is true...I dont know but I'm not prepared to take the risk.

Okay the tablets are called "influenzinum- 30 c" made by Boiron and the print is so tiny but I think the web site is www.boironusa.com. Hope this helps. we use them every year and my kids often have perfect attendance due to no illness.

the vaccine was produced in such a rush, it hasn't been tested;
avoid large crowds, take zinc and vitamin c

I had it. Only had a sore arm at the injection site, but that is no different to any other flu shot I have ever had.

I really questioned whether to get this or not last month.  I was leery; nevertheless, I did get the nasal mist H1N1 with no side effects.

I do not get the flu vx. though because I never have gotten the flu except for one time, and that was the 1 yr. I did get the vx. LOL

The reason I got the H1N1 is because my husband travels around the state in medical facilities and I cannot risk having him bring it home to me.  I already have too many breathing and circulation issues along with thyroid, heart and diabetes.  I didn't want to risk getting this because I don't think I would survive it if I did.  And it was highly recommended that I do get it.  So reluctantly I did.

I had the flu shot for the last 2 years with no ill effects. I cannot find anyone who has the H1N1 shot to offer currently, but I plan on getting it when it is available. I actually have had to be treated for flu complications each flu season 2002-2007, up until I began taking the flu shot.(I have Hashi's but didn't know it.) My children are 8 and 9, I had them each get the nasal mist for H1N1 with no ill side effects. I know of several people who have gotten the H1N1 vaccine and no ill effects. My niece got it and she got it for her 6 month old baby, no ill effects.

My daughter has chosen not to get the vaccine and not to have my 10 month old granddaughter get the vaccine. She has flown here twice with the baby cross country during the swine flu outbreak and luckily neither had contracted a flu of any kind. I guess my point is it's up to each person to do what is best for them and their given situation.

I am by no means a vaccine advocate, just wanted to add more food for thought :)

XOXO

Here's a good video from Dr. Horowitz about the flu vaccine and other vaccines. He even suggests auto-immune disease could be caused by vaccines. I'd be pretty pissed to learn that my Hashi was caused by childhood vaccines.

I have three kids and we never get the flu or the flu shot! I would not take any chances with the swine flu shot either! I think its more propaganda used to get more $$$$ for the monopoly holding manufacturers (Big pharma) I turn off the news or change the channels when they peddle their "bill of goods/snake oil" by commercials or through the mindless media who like to keep us in a state of panic! (Political Pawns) I don't trust any of them!!!! You can give your kids homeopathic flu tablets. They are made specific each year to the current flu strains. We get them from our pediatrician's office. You take 5 tiny tablets each week for 5 weeks. You then skip a week and take 5 more for the next few weeks. Very safe and they have worked for us! Also, lots of vitamin D and C!

It's even harder when trying to keep the little ones from bringing home germs, but, I always tell my daughter to wash her hands constantly and use hand sanitizer as well
I must tell u that the last time i was in the doc's office with her, I watched how this one parent read one of the books to her child as she licked her finger to turn the pages......and i saw on "The Doctors" how that is one way to pass germs to others. Scary but true.

Thank you all. This is some very valuable advice. I must share some with you now. I tried Jernigan's Yeast Ease for my mouth thrush that just wouldn't go away for almost two years, despite every yeast med the docs gave me.

Yeast Ease worked within a few hours. So then I got their Microbojen, which is supposed to fight viruses. I used it one day when I felt a cold coming on. I was very sick for about two hours, then it went away. Could have been the Microbojen, or it could have been a fluke and my Hashi antibodies were playing a trick on me. Ha! Ha!

I don't want to get the shot, or get it for my little one. I am leaning toward natural remedies.

BTW- Here's the link to Jernigan's: http://www.jernigannutraceuticals.com/

If you decide to get ANY immunization, be sure they put it in the muscle.  Two years ago I had a regular flu shot.  The lame brain nurse put it too close to my shoulder joint and I got the bonus of a frozen shoulder!  I would not wish that on my worst enemy!

I had a bad experience almost over 10 years ago with the regular flu shot and i haven't had one since. I didn't consider having the H1N1 shot due to the fact that it is very new and no one truly knows the side effects....

No way - not for me.

I will build my immune system better than consider that shot.

I'm not doing it either.  I did have a seasonal flu shot in early October.  I just finished with the worst round of flu I've had in years -- I didn't go to the doctor, but if I had, I'd guess they'd have dx'd swine flu, since I had the seasonal flu shot -- so if I've already had the flu, there's no point in getting the shot.........

Even if I hadn't already had what could very well be swine flu -- I would not get the shot.  As Laura said - too controversial and not enough studies done.
