Hypo to hyper?

I was diagnosed with hypo in 1995. Started on low dose synthroid and dosages were adjusted (always upward) over the next few years. Things finally leveled out at 100mcg dosage. I had bronchitis early this year. I was in an antibiotic 'loop'..several rounds to get rid of cold. I started losing weight in March and have lost over 60# now. Did a walk in at my doc....they did blood test. They said my 'numbers' were too low and reduced my dosage. It hasn't helped. I am currently at 88mcg of synthroid a day. What has happened to me? I feel like I am going to fly apart!

Please post your thyroid test results with reference ranges (ranges vary lab to lab and have to come from your own lab report).  If you don't have these, you can call your doctor's office or drop by to pick up a hard copy.

Did you lose 60# without trying?

How long have you been on the reduced dose?

Please describe your symptoms in detail.

I have an appointment to go back to the doc for more blood work the last week of December. Will know more by then, I hope. I have talked with my doctor and there are no new meds I have started or stopped. I do have one thing that I do and doc seems to think that it is 'highly probable' that it has 'fixed' my thyroid. I don't want to post my methods here, so if I can PM you somewhere I can tell you what I have been doing. So far, so good. I am in high hopes that this is the end of my thyroid issues, but won't know any more until December. Thanks for your assistance! As I said, I do just one thing and hopefully it has corrected the issues I have. Thanks! Donna

It's very unusual to go from hypo to hyper after 17 years of being hypo.  Without knowing the results of your tests or which tests your doctor ran, I am guessing here.  When you get your results, don't forget to ask for reference ranges also.  The symptoms of overmedication are the same as hyper symptoms, which is what it sounds like you are having.

Many things can change our thyroid meds requirements:  age, other health issues, lifestyle changes, other meds changes, WEIGHT changes, stress, trauma, etc.  60 lbs is a big weight loss.  Thyroid meds are somwhat weight based, i.e. your meds requirements would likely be higher when you weighed 60 lbs more.

There's not a lot I can tell you without seeing some numbers.  It does take Synthroid 4-6 weeks to get completely out of your system, but if my guess is correct, you may start feeling hypo again before that as your levels drop.  When does you doctor plan to follow up with more lab work?

Sorry...still me....don't like touch pads on a laptop! Continuing with the symptoms, my hands would shake, I am irritable and fly off the handle over everything and am angry like I have never been! I'm a quiet person by nature and I just feel full of rage! Everything is bothering me. I cannot stand any type of heat, I will just sit and sweat without lifting a finger because my metabo is running so hot. Double vision. I can be working on a computer or watching TV and all of a sudden everything is out of focus. Can't shake it until it goes away on its own. I am being bothered by depression. When I was talking with my doctor, she could see that my head was shaking and I couldn't make it stop. I put my hands on it to try and make it stop, but it wouldn't. Walking short distances leaves me breathless. Doc checked my lungs and they are clear. Had x-rays in April and they were good. I had an inflammation between my ribs. That is just a side note letting you know that there was nothing going on in the x-ray. I have been off thyroid meds since Monday of this week...I don't know what is going on. I was told it would take a month to get the synthroid out of my system, thus no 'weaning'. Hope you can help me figure this out!

I don't have my numbers right now but will get them. Doc said they were low. She lowered my dose from 100mcg to 88mcg. I had an appointment with her last week and she said there was NO time to ease me off! She just said 'STOP, NOW!' I was at the reduced 88mcg for about a week and felt a little better, but not much.
I did lose 60# without trying! I was having a reaction to antibiotics and was eating oatmeal with real cream, any type of fatty substance that would coat my stomach. No change to my diet, at all!
My symptoms were that my insides felt like they were shaking all of the time. Hard to explain but it was butterflies that kept growing exponentially. I just felt like I was going to fly apart from the inside out. I am exhausted. I have NO energy,
