I am completely confused

I had the right lobe of my thyroid removed in 04. The left lobe remains, BUT is/has a goiter. The goiter pushes on the esophageal wall, making it difficult to swallow. I'm gaining weight, my nails are brittle and my hair is falling out and very brittle as well. I had a contrast CT scan this afternoon.
The doc told me that my thyroid levels would indicate that I had a Hyper-active thyroid. I have a lot of pain and discomfort on the left neck area, which radiates up the back of my head... just behind my left ear and behind my left eye. It has been suggested that I could either have Thyroiditis, Carotidynia, or some nerve disorder. This doesn't explain my sudden weight gain, which has nothing to do with my diet. I exercise  regularly. I am starting to loose work because the pain in my neck becomes worse when looking up for long periods of time.
I just feel as if the two doctors that have me bouncing back and forth to each other are themselves lost, and have no idea as to what may be going on. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I received my CT scan results this week. There have been no changes in the size of the nodule on the left side of my thyroid. SO... the doctor doesn't think that it has anything at all to do with the thyroid. He has placed me on Prednisone for the next 24 days, starting yesterday. He now believes that my condition is caused by swelling of the carotid artery. If the pain and discomfort do not go away by the time I finish up with the regimen of steroids, then they suggest seeing a neurologist.
That's where I am now... 2 years after my first complaint to the doctors.

I am suppose to receive my test and CT scan results on the 16th of Feb, 2010. My other symptoms are: radiating pain from the left lobe area up the back of the head just behind my left ear, as well as radiating pain up through the left sinus area to behind the left eye. The neck area swells when I do any over head work where I have to bend my neck back. The swelling will usually subside within a few of days when applying heat to the area. I will post my results as soon as I receive them.
Thus far though... when I asked both doctors what they propose to do about this... one usually sends me to the other. It has been a back and forth thing for the last 2 years. I am tiring of this non committal yoyoing.
Thank you so much for your time. I so greatly appreciate it.

Do you have your test results?  COuld you please post these, with the reference ranges.

Then we can comment better.

You need to ask your drs what they propose to do.  Weight gain can happen with hyper or hypo.  What are your other symptoms?

THanks
