Irritation/Choking Feeling in Throid area

Ever since I was probably in my teens, I've never been able to wear a shirt that is close to my thyroid.  I can't really describe the feeling.  Perhaps a choking sensation or tightness.  Definitely irritating.  Lately, I get the feeling when I'm laying or sitting down even when I'm wearing shirts that are nowhere near my thyroid.  I have to cover my thyroid to alleviate this horrible feeling.  When I take off the shirt, the feeling is alleviated.  What in the world is going on?

My throat hurt so bad before i had my thyroid removed that i could not wear a cotton t shirt.  I felt like someone had thier finger in my trachea at all times.  I couldnt play with my children, and to prop my head on my hand while laying on the floor to watch tv was impossible.  I could not swallow properly, it felt like i had a piece of steak stuck in my throat.

The day i had my thryoid removed, was the best eating day for me in about  a year.  2 hours after my surgery, i dined on a turkey sandwich, a bag of chips and i had 2 of those little things of blue bell icecream.   the pain went away and has never come back.   I have other issues because of the low thyroid and the disease but the pain is gone.

Id also like to add that my entire life, my weight was about 175.  When i was in the throws of the pain, my weight was at 156, because eating was such a chore.   I am now at 178 and i can eat anything i want, chew ice, eat chips, and i wrestle with my 3 year old all the time now :)

I don't have any idea what it's about.  As I said, I've had it all my life, so I don't think it's related to thyroid necessarily.  I do have a lot of turtle necks that I've tugged at the neck enough to make them look more like cowl necks, though!  There are times when I've thought that there's something about my body that tends to make shirts "pull up" at the front of the neck and down in the back???  Sometimes I even find a shallow V-neck will start touching my neck and cause the same feeling.  It doesn't have to be tight or anything, just there.

I think we're on the same page.  Now that you say it, claustrophobia is probably the right word to use.  I don't have any thyroid problems as far as I know, but the feeling is around that area or right on it, not sure.  I have to "cover" my neck/thyroid with my hand to get rid of the feeling we're talking about.  Do you have any idea what this is all about?

I have the same problem, but I've had it all my life (long before thyroid problems), and I'm not convinced it's a thyroid issue.  I describe mine as a feeling of "claustrophobia", rather than pain, when something touches my neck.  I've learned to buy button shirts or V-necks because even a crew neck (like a T-shirt) bugs me.

"I have to cover my thyroid to alleviate this horrible feeling."  I don't understand what you mean by "cover".
