Is thyroid cancer and ovarian cancer related?

Today I was contacted by my gynecologist to have another pap smear done since I received the info that I have thyroid cancer (12-14-07). I had my last pap on November 1st? I read on both cancers and now I am scared. They want to do further test for ovarian cancer because both my mom and grandmother have had it and now I have thyroid cancer...PLease help....

I am so very, very sorry!  What I have been told is once your body's cancer switch is turned to "on" it's easier for a secondary cancer to form.  Have you been tested for BRCA1 and BRCA2 - a genetic marker for breast/ovarian cancer??

One thing, ovarian cancer *cannot* be detected with a pap smear.  That only checks for cervical cancer.  You would need a trans-vaginal ultrasound to look for suspicious areas on your ovaries and maybe an MRI or CT scan.

Both cancers are hormone sensitive.  That's the major reason that I decided NOT to have estrogen replacement therapy after I had my ovaries removed for PCOS (with very suspicious - but benign - hemorrhagic cysts).  I have to get pap smears done every 6 months and be checked for ovarian (even though I have no ovaries) and breast cancer at least once a year because I have had cancer and because I have both ovarian and breast cancer in my family.

Talk to your endo and your OB/GYN about your fears.  For me I felt much more comfortable getting mammograms, Paps and ultrasounds on a MUCH more frequent basis.  But that was my decision made with my doctors.  Talk it over with yours.
