Is water retention a side effect of synthroid?

Recently, I've started retaining water a great deal. It's come on pretty sudden and I'm trying to get to the bottom of it along with all of my other issues.  I wake up in the morning and my feet just burn. Also, my knees are stiff with it.  I'm on synthroid and just recently (3 days ago) switched from Zantac twice a day to Prilosec once a day.  The fluid retention has been off and on but most recently it seems to be getting worse.  The only thing that helps is to drink a million glasses of water a day and spend my life in the restroom.  What could be causing this?  Those are the only meds I take and I don't eat much sodium.  Went for bloodwork yesterday but I'm gonna have to wait a week to see what it shows and I want to know now!

Hello friend, this is a very old thread :)

From my research drinks like Gatorade, powerade, Etc... can assist in water retention, balancing electrolyte.  For awhile in hyper state, I had bad daily stomach bloating after drinking water, no other drink, just water.  The more I drank, the worse the bloating was.  Read water retention was the cause.  Water retention can happen all over body or isolated locations, such as stomach, legs, Etc.....

Well I tried drinking gatorade, nothing happened at first, a day later, bloating went away !!  now I drink a bottle daily, haven't had any stomach bloatation since.  Freakin amazing !!

If your feet are burning that sounds like a vitamin deffieciency. Maybe have your vitamin d levels checked as well.  Hypos do lack there sun. Also get checked for other ones.

One of the side effects that I have read about from long term untreated hypothyroidism is edema of the legs.  When you get your blood test results back, ask for a copy of the data.  Don't just accept from the doc that everything is "normal".  The best test for hypo t is free T3, along with free T4.  Also, don't let doc get by with checking only TSH.  In the interim, if you want a good indication of your metabolism/thyroid condition, take your temp. several times a day for several days, and compare to the optimal of 98.6.

I never had water retention with it. I was on it for about 10 years, then I was switched to Levothyroid. I always crave salty foods (eat a lot of chips, saltines) and still do not retain fluids.

Hope they get to the bottom of it....
