Low calcium?

I was wondering if any one else who has a thyroidectomy had to get there parathyroid taking out also? I had my thyroidectomy out 2 weeks ago and they transplanted 3 of my parathyroids in myarm. Has any one else had this happen to them? I would greatly appreciate your responses.

I have never heard of the parathyroids being transplanted to the arm.  I had 2 removed during TT and the other 2 were stunned.  They have not resumed working 2 1/2 years after surgery.  I take 2000mg calcium and 1000iu VitD daily.  Good luck!

I had my surgery on Nov. 13th & I am still having to take high doses of calcium.  The doc said my glands are there-they must be in shock still.  I have to take my calcium every 8 hours & I am really ready to stop setting my alarm clock at night to take them.  I hope it gets under control for you soon.  Take Care

I had one of my parathyroids transplanted into my neck and the other 3 were left intact.  I had severe low calcium issues for a while, but now, (5 months post-op) everything seems to be normal calcium wise.  I still take calcium & vit.D but only the typical amount that the average woman should take. . .nothing like the massive doses I was for the first few months.

How are you feeling?

I did not.

Sometimes parathyroids get damaged when taking out the thyroid.

Was the parathyroid something you knew about prior to your thyroid being taken out?
