Major Changes /AACE Guidelines for Hypothyroidism in Adults

Hi.

Here are 3 major changes in the AACE 2012 Clinical Practice Guidelines for Hypothyroidism in Adults which may affect many of us !

Overt Hypothyroidism:

      -->  TSH levels abvove 10 mlU/L

Subclinical hypothyroidism:

      --->  TSH less than 10 mIU/L, with lower Free Thyroxine (Free T4) levels

Medication treatment for Hypothyroidism:

---->   Treated only with levothyroxine drugs.

mmmm - agreed.  I had to go back and demand meds when I started going hypo;  the adjustments and tweeks have been a breeze compared to how I felt before getting any levo at all.  "We don't usually treat below TSH 10" is the brick wall I got last year - it's madness.

When my TSH rose to 6 i developed severe bradypnea (6 breaths a minute) and severe shortness of breath. I agree with flying fool...bad, bad, bad!

"Treated only with levothyroxine drugs.

Many cannot function on T4 alone, why do they keep ignoring Triiodothyronine, (T3).?

Yeah, if Dr's keep in mind the number 10 for TSH then a LOT of people are going to remain untreated.

I think there is a newer post where a Dr did EXACTLY that. Said that the TSH of 7 or 8 was not high enough as it needed to be higher than 10 before treatment was recommended.

This is bad, bad, bad!

I've done a little bit of research on this -- it sounds like a major setback for many thyroid patients, if doctors actually follow the guidelines.

Sure wish they would have recommended new Free T4 and Free T3 reference ranges!
