Meds after Partial Thyroidectomy - can meds cause hyper symptoms

Hi

Is it possible for someone NOT to need any medication(Levothyroxine) after a partial thyroidectomy? If they removed only one lobe , is it possible for the remaining part to produce enough hormone?

My TSH is 1.62 . I have been using Euthyrox 50 for about 7 weeks now after a PT and I think I am having hyper symptoms rather than hypo. No weight gain at all but brain fog ,sluggishness, zero energy. Sometimes im so lightheaded it feels like I could faint any second.I also have some anxiety-can't sit still. Some days I feel OK but other days my symptoms hits me hard!

Thanks!

Having that toxic nodule attached to the part of the gland that now was removed was probably a good thing to have done.

A toxic nodule produces its own hormone - very similiar the thyroid hormone but not exact - that can swing the body and energy level of a patients into many senerios. Labs can sometimes come back normal as a clear indicator nothing is going on but in reality that nodule is making this very ill.

Your removal was probably the best to get that out and see where you land after the toxic nodule was gone.

I don't know what 8H00 is but I see you are on a .50mcg thyroid replacement drug so lets look at that vs your lastest labs.

Sept 20th you only had a TSH test? and the 1.6 really for many could be normal and fine with no changes made in a doctors descretion based off your history.

Looking at the current FT3  5.6 and the FT4 -24 tells alot more on why you are feeling you are hyper and classically you could be.

Both are high counts on the reference ranges with the T4 being HIGH- abnormal on the maximum ranges given.

You're on a T4 med..... Your FT4 lab is high... common sense should tell the doctor to back off some of the T4 medication and retest again in a few weeks.

It looks like you are too high on hormone and the speculation could come back that your side left after the PT is functioning failrly well.

You certainly may need a decrease in your medication to .25mcg thyroid replacement and then retest after another 4-8 weeks pass to see where your new levels have dropped to.

This may not be the final change either with your meds... Decreasing the T4 could result in a low FT3 level now ( and a correct T4 hormone level) and you may need to test after the decrease to see that being abnormal for you and possibly add a small T3 medication in with the .25mcg T4 and then wait........... again and then retest until you and your doctor find the most optimal level with meds - eliminating ALL symptoms for you to manage yourself well again.

Its complicated... but easy too.

Hi There

Thanks for the previous comments.

Had a call from my GP last night. He went through my lab test results and instructed me to stop taking any meds for 30 days. He said I must get my labs done again in 30 days to see where my levels are at and what my symptoms would be like.

Is there anything I should expect from today from not taking any meds? When should I start feeling different from not taking meds and when could I expect feeling different?

I recon it should take a few days before I might notice anything as I think the ''excess'' hormone should take a while to ''get out of my body''. I still feel hyper - shaky hands,no energy, mild headache, exhausted, fatigued,no appitite. I haven't been to the loo since this morning, so Im curious to see if my stools will still be loose or maybe Im to quick on this and should give it a few days. I just hope the weight loss would stop now. Im getting worried as I dont want to look underweight.

It is amazing how many people I spoke to during these couple of months who said that they wouldn't mind having an over-active thyroid to get rid of weight and all I can say is you should thank God every day of your life cause you don't know what HELL we ''thyroid-sufferers'' are going through each and every day.

Hopefully this will result into something positive for me.

Thanks for your comments!

Hi There

Condition:

Male, 31 years old. Partial Thyroidectomy on 6 August 2010 due to a toxic nodule. Was hyper for 3 months before my surgery on 6 Aug.

My test results are :

TSH - 1.62    (0.50 - 2.00) Test taken 8H00 in the morning (20 Sept 2010)
Free T3 - 5.6 (3.1 - 6.8)     Test taken 16h00 in the afternoon (4 Oct 2010)
Free T4 - 24  (12 - 22)       Test taken 16h00 in the afternoon (4 Oct 2010)

Medication:
Euthyrox 50 (Levothyroxine) once per day, 8H00 every morning since 16 August 2010(10 days after PT surgery)

My symptoms:
Weight loss , dizzy , fatigue , fast heartrate , headaches , loose stools , no energy , mild depression , sluggish.

I will only be able to consult the docter next week regarding the test results.I truly think this looks like hyperthyroidism again, but I could be wrong.TSH and FT3 looks ''normal'' but T4 is high.If I look at my symptoms I would recon hyper.

Thanks for your comments!!!!

HI

MANmom , Super_sally888, Smilerdeb and  stella5349!

Thanks for all your comments and support! Had my T3/T4 labs done today. Will have to wait 2 days for the results.

Hopefully this will guide me in the right direction. My GP said that these results might determine a lower or higher dosage or even NO dosage at all as according to him the TSH is fine.

Frankly I don't mind taking any meds as long as I don't get any symptoms anymore.

Will post the results as soon as I get it.

Thanks!

Your free T3 labs and Free T4 can tell you if you are truly hyper. Do you have them?

Anxiety can be felt on both ends of the scale ...both HYPO and HYPER.

Whenever the thyroid levels are 'out of whack' then usually anxiety rears its ugly head until the meds are decreased/increased whichever is needed.

Some people with partial don't need replacement meds.  However, to really know what's happening, we'd need to know your FT3, FT4 (along with the reference ranges).

TSH alone doesn't give enough information.

Your symptoms could also possibly be hypo, or they could be hyper.

Please ask your doctor to do some more testing.

Yes, about 40% of the time the remaining thyroid can produce enough hormone to be normal.
