Meds doesn't work

Hello Dr. Lupo:

I have be taking meds to my thyroid since 1991. I have alway told my doctors that the meds do not work because I could not ever lost weigh. I have gained from 150 to 280. Oh, I did lost about 45lbs about two years ago. But I was working out five days a week for about two hours a day and I was working part time. I am always cold and lately very fatigue. I took a sleep study about two weeks ago and the doctor told me that I needed to have my thyroid checked and my TSH level should be 1 - 2 but most doctors prefer to have TSH levels at 3 - 4. I want to lost weigh but I am working full time and get up at 0515 and have to leave the house at 0630. I usually do not get home before 1630 to 1700. I have to cook and help with homework. Found out from the sleep study I need to get 8 hours of sleep. I need to work in the exercise but I want the meds to work, too. What should my TSH level be and how many mg of meds should I be taking?

Thyroid medications are not diet pills.

Don't expect weight loss even with a TSH of between 1 and 2.

You medication is working! when they keep your levels within Labs reference range.

Diet and exercise.

If you consume more calories than you burn, you will not lose weight.

Its rough, I know,  I am in the same situation - I want to lose weight too.

Good luck!
