Natural vs. Synthetic

What do you think is better? I am currenty on Synthroid, but I have discovered it contains Lactose, and I have been mildly lactose intolerante for years now. Most of the synthetic brands have lactose, so I think I might go to natural.

I have now started the canadian desiccated natural thyroid "thyroid". I have only been taking it for 3 days now, so not too much of a change in symptoms, but I will keep you posted.

How are you since you started they new drugs?

I am going to find out if the pharmacy that can make the thyroid replacement w/o the lactose is covered by my extended heath care, or how much it cost, and try that route.

I agree with Deb.

Can't rush treatment here.

She is on synthetic thyroid meds, I am on natural.

She does great on synthetic - I did horrible.

It takes time to get a proper level in no matter what you chose. AND just so you are aware, if you do choose to switch to nautal desiccated thyroid meds, like Armour, recently they switched their processing of it and now it contains more lactose then it did.

Many Armour patients are now finding they too are suffering the IBS and bloating cause by lactose since the formula was changed.

I moved on to Naturthroid from Armour. I find I need alot more meds ( grains)  to keep me well on this than before when I was taking the old Armour.

" The more you know:..........

Changing meds can take that long , just as they say that someone who has TT or RAI...it can take sometimes over a year to get the levels right.
If you rush your dosages, you will end up a mess.
Take baby Steps and you will find it will all even out.

I have decided after reading some more post's about natural thyroid replacement and people haviong better luck with it, that I am going to talk to my Dr. about try a natural thyroid med.

They have said that it could take like a year to get the meds just right, why suffer for that long if I don't have to!

What about Levothroid?  That is also lactose free.

good thought I never thought of that! I also live in Canada and I can't get for example Levoxyl, apparently!

Did you happen to check if your insurance covers it?  Sometimes compounded medications are not or you may have to pay up front and then get reimbursed.  When I checked into it for something else, it was VERY expensive.  Just thought I would share that with you!

About 4 weeks after starting the synthroid I started having what the specialist thinks could be IBS. Sometimes I feel blown up with air, other times I have abdomen spasms or pain along my rib cage. Most discomfort/pain happens after eating. Also I go from diarrhea to constipation quite easliy.

I'm so glad to know other people have had the same reaction to it.

Before the doctor discovered that I was hypo. I didn't have much symptoms other than being tired all the time, and my menstural cycles were off since I had stopped my birth control in Mid October.

I had terrible diarrhea (up to 10 times daily) and it actually dropped my potassium level.  I also had bloating and abdominal pain in addition to severe sinus infections that would not respond to antibiotics. What problems are you having?

What happened when you started taking the synthroid?

I too am lactose intolerant and was not able to handle Synthroid very well.  I also found out it contained atacia which is not a good thing with people with severe allergies like me.  I did my own research and found out that Levoxyl does not contain either ingredients.  You may want to look that up. I don't know much about the "natural" such as Armor and so forth.  I just had my endo changed my meds to Levoxyl so we will see how it goes!  Good luck.
