Overactive Thyroid caused by contraceptive implant?

I am 24 f and was diagnosed and treated for hyperthyroidism over a year ago. I have recently relapsed with total T4 test result at 86 and am being treated for Graves disease.

Looking back over my medical history I can see that my initial symptoms before I was first diagnosed (racing heart, erratic mood swings, extreme emotions including hysterical crying, heat intolerance, dramatic weight loss of over 3 stone in 3 months, massive appetite) coincide almost exactly with having the contraceptive implant (Implanon) put in.

Whilst I am aware Graves disease can be common in young females, I would be interested to hear if anyone else had a similar story?

Many Thanks.

I am 31 years old just yesterday I found out I had graves  I never had issues with my thyroid or my vitamin D until I got the nexplanon. I was on it for a 2 years and 3 month and let me tell you not by choice, my doctor who put it in told me I was almost a year mark to hold off because I was complaining about blessed nonstop. Needless to say I bleed for the whole first year of me getting the nexplanon and this was feb when I stopped bleeding. I notice other diffriances in my body I had more pain in my joints my moods were all over the place and my boobs hurt non stop. The problem I ran into was that in March I moved from where my doctor put it in to another state and the doctor there was an idiot. He could not remove it there so he referred me to an obgyn unfortunately they submitted it for only a well woman exam and he never corrected it and i complained a whole lot nothing was done. Feb can around and I hit my 2 year mark with it desperate and at this point feeling that it was making my body and myself going crazy cuz I new it was the birth control doing this, I was tenpted to cut it out my self. Around the end end of the 2nd year with this god forsaken thing in my arm I noticed my thyroid was swelling and I brought it up to my idiot doctor who did and said nothing. So April I switched doctor and they took it out on my first appointment with in a week my moods were better and my pain was manageable the problem my thyroid was still swollen. My doctor put in for an ultra sound and Friday I was told Graves' disease. I was like how I never had issues in fact before I got the dang thing my blood work showed my thyroid was normal. I was told the week they took it out my vitamin D was really low. I do t know what to do and when I google nexplanon and thyroid issues I see I'm not the only one complaining and is having to deal with this crap. I'm emotional about it because I know nothing in my life has changed not my diet not my vitamin intake nothing but somehow once I got the nexplanon my body was in more pain then normal my moods were all over the board and my thyroid swollen with bleeding non stop for the first year. I know it was the nexplanon and not my body acting up. I feel comfort in knowing I'm not the only one who feels this way

The high levels of oestrogen in the implants can and do affect the levels of your thyroid hormones. The implants have been researched and shown to cause more than just thyroid issues and are not recommended as often. Doctors often just hand them out willy-nilly as they do not understand the connection in the processes. Plus they get kick backs (payments) from a certain brand over another.
