Strange, Ive been pain free for quite a while until we went to the beach this weekend. As I was laying in the sun we were joking about knowing that the sun was bad for your skin but we was sunbathing for the vitiman D. The next day I started having pain again in my legs that felt so much like the pain I have with my throid flair ups. Will we ever understand thyroid problems?
This is very interesting. I have Graves disease, on remission for the last 3 years (no drugs) and recently relapsed (I guess too much stress at work). My endo decided to check my Vit D along with thyroid panel and AB and it came back really, really low at 9 (lab range was greater than 36). What's interesting is that my calcium and PHT are all normal. I was prescribed 50,000 IU weekly for three months so we'll see how it goes.
I was wondering if my thyroid had something to do with this and it appears that there's a corelation based on what I've read here. Does anyone know of any research done that links Vit D deficiency with Thyroid disease?
I don't have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (Thyroidectomy almost 4 yrs. ago) but found out that my vit. D was low in the spring at 18. They put me on 50,000 IU for 4 wks. and then 1000 IU in the spring & summer & 2000 IU for Fall & winter. (I forget them once in awhile) Anyway, it hasn't made much difference in the way I feel. I get fatigued, muscle cramps/twiching etc.. I had more blood work done and now I'm told that my PTH is slightly low (calcium in the upper range of normal) and could have been a result of the surgery. My magnnesium last year was at 2.0 What's weird is that I do drink alot of milk and to find I was low in D surprised me. I have an Endo appt. at the end of this month and hopefully will get to the bottom of this mess. It's been as I say "Almost 4 yrs. into this and one would think that they could get my thyroid levels in check as they seem to either be to high or too low. Lately more on the low side.
I remember many months back I was very achy and not feeling great. My endo ran a Vitamin D test without even telling me as part of my bloodwork. Mine came back at 13 which was horribly low. He called and immediately had me put on Drisdol 50,000iu once a week (after he ran a bunch of tests of my parathyroids). I've been on it for about 3 months now and my check 2 weeks ago had me at 38. Yes, it made a difference in how I felt. 3 days after the first dose I finally stopped hurting so much and now I don't hurt at all. He's keeping me on it until February and then I'll move to something over the counter. He said the stuff over the counter just isn't absorbed as well as Drisdol.
I lived on the island of Guam for 3 1/2 years and got PLENTY of vitamin D, however it did not help me. I was still exhausted and depressed....of course I did work out 3 hours a day and had had only two season for 3 1/2 years - WET & DRY, I was a LONG way from family, my husband was cheating on me, and then he left me, so that might have had something to do wtih those symptoms. Oh and I drank too much alcohol back then. hehehe.........but seriously, I had extra vitamin D this last week on vacation in Florida, and I was not exhausted or depressed, however the heat made the hives I already had much much worse :)
I think the Vit D thing has MUCH to do with the thyroid. After my TT my calcium levels wouldn't come up to barely normal, and stay up. I was borderline deficient in Calcium for months after surgery, despite taking tons of calcium suppliments. I had tingling in fingers and toes constantly and cramping in muscles that don't "normally" cramp, Like diaphram and toes. Then at my request, my doc tested my D. It's Vit D that allows the calcium to do it's work... Mine was way low at 24, (range 40-100). After trying over the counter stuff for a couple of months (chewable D3, 2000IU's), it was still low at 37. I'm now taking 50,000IU's weekly via script.
I called the pharmacy to see if perscription Vit D was D3, D2, or just D, or what... They told me that it was just D, so I've been taking a little D3 on my own now too. My energy has improved. I'll be excited to get my numbers when I get my bloodwork next. The big thing with Vit D is the associated calcium with it. If I don't keep that up or can't take mine for a few days, I really feel that old tingling coming back right away!
I'm with AR. I'd like to have ALL my vitamin levels tested for referance. I've also started taking potassium along with the D and the calcium/magnesium combo, to make sure that cramping goes away and stays away. But how does one know exactly which combo to take if they only test for Calcium and Vit D in the bloodwork? They all do work together right?
What rohit just said is why I think I need to have my vitamin D checked again. "daily 1,000IU for six months but no improvement". That makes me wonder what my D levels are right now.
I saw a blip on the news about vitamin D. They said if you were to sunbathe every day, something like 8-12 minutes of sun a day should give you all the vitamin D you need. Plenty of Melatonin, too.
I worked outside a lot waaay back in the olden days (three years ago). Building additions, garages, etc. I got plenty of sun on a weekly basis. I should not have a vitamin D problem. I was getting plenty of sun a month before my Vitamin D deficiency was found. It's thyroid related somehow.
Maybe it's malabsorbtion, as rohit said.
I am also one of those who has low vitamin D (23) {26-80} and also has Hashi/Hypo . I have muscles aches /pain /joint pain and some depression . I did start last mont mega vitamin D 50000IU but after 2 dose , i am feeling way hot , i thought i could turn back to Hyper again but that came back normal , so cut my mega dose from 50000IU/week to 40000IU /week. Keep in mind i was taking daily 1000IU for 6 months but no improvement in vit d level and symptoms. So i am sure Vitamin D or other Vitamins and mineral absorption is related to thyroid . I have posted in many forum and found lot of people has vit D deficiency so you are not alone.
maybe I will give it a whirl
I like tanning better though :)
now i do recall that once in a while, my throat area would feel very tight and whenever that happened, i felt tired and depressed as well. maybe that's when the antibody were attacking me?
i bought the Vitamin D3, 400 IU, with regards to the dose, there are different opinions(some say up to 2000 IU, some say stay within 1000 IU) and also i guess it depends on if you are indeed low on that. i was so despaired last night so i took 3 tablets. i probably will stay on 2/day and see how that goes.
It seems when my Hashi kicks up
(damn those antibiotics I took for that tooth) my neck swells a bit and really becomes sore.
I usually can snap out of it - but I am interested in the Vit D thing.
How much to take-- guess?
Stella, maybe i shall go out more often to get some sunshine!
when i was first diagnosed last year, my thyroid gland was enlarged slightly, i just had a ultrasound on Monday and still waiting for the result. my biggest complain now is hair loss....Gee, i am scared to go to show everyday....i don't want to go bold!
I know this sounds odd but when I tan indoor or out (VitD) I feel much better,
Today I should go - came home from work.
Helen - do you have swelling in your neck?
My vitamin D was low last Fall, so I started taking 1,000IU per day at the request of my Endo. It helped quite a bit with my depression.
I haven't had it checked again, so I don't know if I'm good, or taking too much, or if the improvement was just a placebo effect.
I've also been taking two multi-vitamins a day, per doctor's order. Not sure if that is good or bad. It would take a whole lot of tests to see if I am deficient or storing unneeded vitamins and minerals.
I should add that to my list of questions and requests for my Endo.
