Scared after total Thyroidectomy

I had a total Thyroidectomy yesterday afternoon to remove a 5cm benign mass that was on my left Thyroid. After waking up from the surgery and one day later my voice is completely ruined. I can't speak above a whisper, I can't clear my throat, when I try to drink water, some of it leaks down the wrong tube on the left side of my throat it's like the left side of my throat is paralyzed or something. I also keep getting an uncomfortable feeling of a reoccurring air bubble that gets trapped in the middle of my chest (that's the only way I can think to describe it), it kind of comes out of nowhere causes discomfort for a second and then releases.

I'm only one day removed form my surgery and completely miserable and disheartened. I have a need to clear my throat constantly and when I try to do it nothing happens and it makes everything more frustrating.

Where do I go from here? I wasn't expecting any postoperatove problems of this magnitude.

Please contact your Doctor as this needs to be addressed.  There may be nerve damage .. oftentimes it is temporary.  The first thing they did as I woke up from being put out was ask me to say the a, b, c's .....

Pls let us know how you are doing.

How are you feeling now?  Did the hours since you last wrote bring about any relief?

The air bubble issue is probably a residual effect of the aesthesia.  That’s a pretty typical post-surgery experience and should pass.  In fact, they encourage everyone to let it ‘pass’ (oh, dear).

Your voice and throat should be feeling better as time goes on.  Hopefully, today things will be improved.  Obviously, if they don’t improve you’ll want to call the surgeon.  Actually, it can’t hurt to go ahead, as Totie suggests, and call the surgeon anyway – if for nothing else than to put your mind at ease.

I hadn’t expected so many post-operative issues either, but they did eventually get worked out.  Then there comes the maintenance and management of the meds, etc.  But that’s okay, you’ll be able to handle it - I know you will.  Plus we’ll be here to support you.

Get plenty of rest.

Good luck and good health.
