Swollen neck

I have a swollen area (Lump) on the left side of my neck - near the collarbone in line with the ear.  It is painful.  I just noticed it recently  I didn't have it the morning but did wake with a sore throat. I'm not sure if it is thyroid related. Should I see a doctor?  I'm not worried that it is anything serious.  If I'm just getting a cold I can treat myself.  Ay advice would be helpful
